Understanding Flash Sync Speeds with Karl Taylor

Check out this video from Karl Taylor that covers flash sync speeds and why you can’t synchronize your flash on a higher shutter speed. He breaks down details of how focal plane and leaf shutters operate, as well as understanding how high speed sync works at the much higher shutter speeds (up to 1/8000s on some cameras).

Zoom H5 Available for Pre-Order

The Zoom H4n has been the go-to external recorder since the whole HDSLR craze started. Zoom has recently announced a couple of new external audio recorders in recent months – with the Zoom H5 being the entry-level and more direct replacement for the H4n. Panasonic Lumix GX7 Firmware Update Ver. 1.3

Panasonic has released a firmware update for the Lumix GX7. Firmware version 1.3 provides the following improvements:

  1. Connection problem with Apple iOS devices via Wi-Fi is fixed.
  2. Improved stability of startup process in the use of UHS-I compliant SD memory card.

iStick Adds a Simple USB Drive for iPhone and iPad

Today’s mobile phones and tablets are simply amazing. However, if there’s one gripe I have, it is the ability to quickly and seamlessly transfer data between my phone and mobile devices. About the simplest way to just transfer a file without the need to import through a dedicated program is a cloud sharing platform like Dropbox. I use the heck out of it.

Dropbox, Box and Google Drive all work great until you need to make a big file transfer on a cellular network and you are in a place where your coverage is limited. Then, you could be spending minutes staring at a screen. Or, you have to plug your phone into a computer and jump through a program’s import process.

The Hyper iStick looks like it may be nice stop-gap until Pied Piper finishes up its revolutionary compression algorithm.  [Read more…]

Leica M Edition 100 Kit Features Film & Digital Cameras with 3 Lenses

In celebration of Leica’s 100th anniversary, the camera and lens maker has announced the Leica M ‘Edition 100’ kit, which features the Leica M-A film camera and the Leica M Monochrom digital camera. Additionally, the kit includes the Leica Summilux-M 28mm, 35mm and 50mm lenses, along with a black aluminum case.

The kit will be available exclusively as sets in Leica Stores and Boutiques in a limited run of 101 sets.
