Atomos Ninja Hands-On

April 17, 2011 By Eric Reagan

I checked out a lot of cool new stuff at NAB 2011; however, one of the coolest pieces of tech that I got up close with was the new Atomos Ninja HDMI-based recorder.  In short, the Atomos Ninja captures the uncompressed stream from your camera’s HDMI output.  The stream is captured as Apple ProRes HQ in a much higher quality than what goes through your camera’s compression onto the CF or SD card. April 16, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Sony added a prosumer-level external flash to its lineup last week.  The new flash features the same “Quick Shift Bounce” rotation as found the the flagship HVL-F58AM flash.  It has guide number of 43 and offers 22 increments of power adjustments between full and down to 1/128 power – all in 1/3 stops – and is powered by 4 AA batteries.

The HVL-F43AM is slated for release later this Summer for around $350.

Think Tank Photo Retrospective 5 Camera Bag

April 14, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Think Tank Photo has announced a new bag aimed at Micro Four Thirds and other mirrorless camera users – the Retrospective 5.  Akin to the rangefinder-esque design of many of today’s mirrorless cameras, the Retrospective 5 camera bag mixes old-school look with new-school features.

It is available in black and Pinestone colors and can accommodate a mirrorless camera with 2-3 lenses and several other accessories.  The Retrospective 5 should be available in May for $129 direct from Think Tank Photo’s website.

Final Cut Studio X . . . Stay Tuned

April 13, 2011 By Eric Reagan

One of the big missing pieces to the Final Cut Pro X announcement last night was any mention of the rest of the Final Cut Studio suite of products.  As evident from the comments in the live blog post, pros are very interested/concerned about where the FCP X sneak peek leaves Motion, Color, etc. [Read more…]

Final Cut Pro X Annoncement Video [Updated: Better Video]

April 13, 2011 By Eric Reagan

(I use the word “video” very loosely.) However, I’ve embedded 4 videos below that contain almost all of the FCP X announcement. The videos were shot from the pocket of my camera bag and I was not monitoring the framing (because I was live-blogging the event and taking photos at the same time) – so I’m really sorry about that guys.

Dear Joby, feel free to kick me next time you see me for not bringing a Gorillapod with me.  Anyway, you can see a somewhat reasonable amount of the projector and hear the commentary pretty clearly, which will give you a little better insight into the new software (perhaps better than my cursory commentary in the live blog post).

If you missed the live coverage, there are plenty of screen shots there, along with a summary of most of the key new features.  Between the live blog coverage and these videos, you should have a decent idea of what FCP X looks like and how it functions. [Read more…]

There is a crowd growing outside of the conference room of the Final Cut Pro User Group Supermeet right now.  We’re all waiting to take our seats to see what everyone at NAB 2011 has been talking about for the past couple of days . . . the unveiling of the next generation of Final Cut Pro.  (Let’s just say that better be what happens or their will be complete anarchy here.)
