Sony A700 Review

August 13, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Sony A700

The Sony A700 is rather aged at the time of this review in DSLR years.  I expect a refresh soon; however, I had one on my hands while working on the Sony A330 Review and thought it would be worthwhile to share my thoughts on this camera – mainly, because I really like it.

The Sony A700 was Sony’s first serious DSLR.  It was the second Alpha-series DSLR to be released and followed the introductory A100.  It was and still is a worthy second offering.  To find out why I think so, keep reading. [Read more…]

Lenses and Gear for Shooting Events

August 12, 2009 By Chris Gampat

Some of us that read this blog make a living or some extra income from shooting events. These events require specific tools: such as good, fast lenses at certain focal lengths. Today I received a question from someone that wants to go into event photography but wants to know what type of gear to get.

Hey Chris,

I’ve got a Canon 40D now and friends, people I meet and family are all asking me to shoot their events. They want anything from their parties, bbqs, baby christenings, etc. What equipment should I look into? Should I stay with my 28-135mm kit lens? Will I need a flash? I don’t want to spend too much money either.

-Mike

First off Mike, congratulations: while the fact that you have a nice big camera will encourage everyone around you to constantly bother you about taking their photos and then uploading them on Facebook and other sharing sites, you should be able to make some sort of profit from it all. There are a couple of factors and things that you need to keep in mind before going out there and shooting on top of buying equipment. [Read more…]

Nikon D5000 Recall

August 11, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Several folks have emailed in regarding a Nikon D5000 recall.  It’s been a few weeks since the “recall” and we didn’t post an update when it came out.  Nikon refers to the occurrence as a “service advisory.”

While Nikon takes great measures to assure high quality in its imaging products, it has come to our attention that an electronic component related to power control in some Nikon D5000 digital SLR cameras does not meet factory specifications and may, in certain circumstances, prevent the camera from turning on, thus preventing operation of the camera.
Indications of this issue include:

1. The camera cannot be operated when the power switch is on, even with a fully-charged battery.
2. The camera cannot be operated with the EH-5a AC Adapter connected through the EP-5 Power Connector and the power switch on.

The solution:
Nikon has isolated the issues related to this and has effectively resolved them. Preparations have been made at a special Nikon repair facility to streamline the processes associated with the solution. Service related to this issue, including the cost of shipping affected D5000 cameras to Nikon, as well as their return to customers, will be free of charge. To further minimize customer inconvenience, Nikon will return serviced cameras to customers promptly, employing (whenever possible) transportation that limits transit time to two days.

There’s a way to check the serial number on your Nikon D5000 and get more details on this page.

The Essence of Street Photography: The Paparazzi

August 11, 2009 By Chris Gampat

Julia Roberts: close up side shot

There are many different elements to street photography. As I’ve stated in previous posts, good things to focus on are the recession and the unusual/candid. There are lots more elements to street photography than that, and in this posting we will be focusing on something that I’m only now delving into: the paparazzi. [Read more…]

Nikon D4 Rumor

August 10, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D4 Listing

This is a little out of left field and little off the release calendar; however, I got a tip on it and the post went up fresh today.  I think this is a little off-base since we just saw the Nikon D300s and D3000 released a couple weeks ago.

I think it’s more likely that the site is just fishing for attention, but that’s a juicy camera model, so I’ll bite.  It’s been close to 2 years since the D3 came out; however, I still don’t think that’s long enough – at least not according to the Nikon DSLR Roadmap.

What do you think?

Sony A330 Review

August 10, 2009 By Eric Reagan

The Sony A330 is 10.2-megapixel DSLR that is a follow-up to the groundbreaking A300.  I wouldn’t necessarily call the Sony A330 an upgrade to the A300 – more like a refresh.

First off, let me get to the point of who this camera is for – consumers upgrading from point and shoot cameras, period.  It’s not a typical enthusiast, or aspiring pro shooter’s camera.  It’s not a do-it-all DSLR like the Canon Rebel T1i or Nikon D5000.  This camera is first and foremost for those folks out there who are thinking about a DSLR but are a little intimidated by all the bells, whistles and interchangeable lenses found on DSLRs. Sony A750, A850 and A950 Leaks

August 9, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Sony A750, A850, A950

More presumed leaks directly from Sony.  This time, you can add the A750 and A950 to the already unveiled Sony A850.  The hole appears to already have been plugged on Sony’s site.

Additionally, there was some speculation a few days back on DP Review forums that tossed out these model number, along with price and sensor specs:

1.  A950 with backlit 24.6Mp Exmor sensor @ $2999.95

2.  A850 with 24.6 Mp @ $1999.95

3.  A750 with 14MP backlit senssor @ $1200.00.

The poster nailed the A850 sensor and is probably pretty close on price as well.  Having pulled these model names of thin air is a pretty lucky guess – or maybe he knows something we don’t…?
