Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM

September 5, 2008 By Eric Reagan

It looks like the Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM may have slipped out a bit early. The PDF manual  for this new 105-600mm equivalent has surfaced on the web.  Notable in the specs is that the zoom is a twist rather than a push-pull zoom seen on similar super-telephoto zoom lenses like the Canon EF 100-400mm L.

This could be a killer telephoto zoom when matched with the Super SteadyShot IS on Sony Alpha DSLRs.  Check out the full specs below and stay tuned to Photography Bay for the latest on digital cameras and lenses as we approach Photokina 2008.

Canon: Destined Evolution

September 5, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Canon has put up a teaser site for the release of their new model, which is all but certain to be the 5D replacement.

I’ll leave the guesswork up to you.  Place your questions, comments and derogatory remarks in the comments below.

Update: Another teaser shot from Canon Japan via Engadget:

Nikon MX Format

September 4, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Nikon currently operates with two sensor formats in its DSLRs, DX and FX.  Practically speaking, the FX format is the same size as the old 35mm film frame.  The DX is smaller, which results in a “crop factor” of 1.5x when compared to the 35mm “full frame.”  Thus, a 50mm lens appears to have the focal length of a 75mm lens on a DX camera.  The Nikon D3 and D700 are FX format cameras.  All other Nikon DSLRs use a DX format sensor.

Recent rumblings and some pretty convincing evidence suggests that Nikon may have something bigger in store for us, much bigger. [Read more…]

Cnet Asia is reporting that they’ve all but confirmed Canon’s release of a follow up to the Canon 5D later this month directly from the horse’s mouth.

We have word from Canon that it will be unveiling a new dSLR later this month. While the company didn’t indicate which unit it will be, it did mention to us that it will replace a “long overdue model”.

For the latest word on the Canon 5D Mark II, stay tuned to Photography Bay’s Canon 5D Mark II page.

Samsung GX-20 Review at Think Camera

September 4, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Think Camera has posted a review of the Samsung GX-20.

Just because Samsung are relatively new to the photographic game is by no means an excuse to ignore what the GX-20 is – a powerful little DSLR that will give other manufacturers a good run for their money.

For more news and info on the GX-20, be sure to visit Photography Bay’s Samsung GX-20 Reviews and Resources.

Canon 7D Rumored by Image and Nature

September 4, 2008 By Eric Reagan

UPDATE: The Canon 7D has been officially announced.  Read more on Photography Bay’s Canon 7D Reviews and Resources. Check availability at Amazon.com.

Image & Nature has a summary of their current issue on this page. The image of the magazine cover, along with the article summary mentions the Canon 7D. Interestingly, it looks like the magazine pits the Canon 7D against the Nikon D90.

Anyone that reads French and would care to elaborate on the contents, feel free to chime in at the comments below.

Note: One DPR commenter says that they read the magazine and it’s rumors only.

Stay tuned for more.

September 4, 2008 By Thursday Bram

There’s a whole list of bloggers posting updates from Photoshop World, providing pretty thorough coverage for those of us who aren’t there. John Paul Caponigro got the idea yesterday and managed to put it together in a hurry. He invited the ‘movers and shakers’ at Photoshop World to post the highlights of their day during each day of the convention, and so far, it’s going well.

So far, the list of participating bloggers includes the following:

  • Corey Barker
  • John Paul Caponigro
  • Dave Cross
  • Laurie Excell
  • Martin Evening
  • Scott Kelby
  • Deke McClelland
  • Joe McNally
  • John Nack
  • Moose Peterson
  • Jeff Schewe
  • Colin Smith
  • Ben Willmore
  • David Ziser

They keep trickling in, though, so it’s worth checking back to see who else has added their thoughts about the various talks going on.

First Sony A900 Ad Leaked – UPDATED – Now with REAL SPECS

September 4, 2008 By Eric Reagan

UPDATED: The Sony A900 has been officially unveiled. See Photography Bay’s Sony A900 Announcement and Sony A900 Reviews and Resources for more info.

This is the first advertisement that I’ve seen for the Sony A900. It appears to be legit and coming from a Danish photography magazine. [via DPR]

It looks like there are bubbles in the ad featured with the A900, which are reminiscent of the Sony Foam City shoot in Miami earlier this year for images like.no.other. Perhaps Sony is extending the mileage of Foam City to the A900 as well.

[Update: Here’s Ad # 2 leaked:]

The text in the ad reads as follows:

The new a900 has arrived. A new height in the “a” revolution is now within reach. Engineered with the exclusive 24.6 Mega Pixel Full Frame Exmor CMOS sensor, an industry breakthrough from Sony, this powerhouse integrates only the best imaging technologies from the world’s leading image sensor manufacturer. A work of art for the truly discerning individual.

24.6 Mega Pixel Full Frame Exmor CMOS Sensor – Dual BIONZ Image Processing Engine – Intelligent Preview – 100% Viewfinder, 0.74x Magnification – 3.0”, 921K-out Hybrid LCD – 9-point Centre Dual-cross AF (with f2.8 sensor and wide-area 10-point assist) – 5 fps Continuous Shooting – SteadyShot INSIDE

[via xitek]

Also, Sony appears to have confirmed with some sources that there will be a new DSLR launched on September 10th. [via PC World] It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that will be the day for the A900.

Expect to see lots more A900 coverage as we approach Photokina 2008.

For more on the Sony A900 flagship DSLR, stay tuned to Photography Bay’s Sony A900 page.

September 3, 2008 By Eric Reagan

O’Reilly has just announced the release of their Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi/450D Companion.  It’s $24.99 and, as the title implies, covers the functionality of the Canon Rebel XSi.  O’Reilly is touting the “lessons” the book offers as an advantage to the typical user manual of do this, do that instructions on how a camera works.  It’s available for pre-order at Amazon.com for $16.49.

Press Release

Sebastopol, CA—Have you ever bought a new camera, only to be so overwhelmed by all the buttons, gizmos, and gadgets, that you don’t touch it for months? If you’ve ever been caught in this situation, don’t worry–with O’Reilly Media’s new Companion series, you’ll be wowing people with your new photos in no time.

The newest book in this new series, The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi/450D Companion ($24.99) is not a typical camera guide.
