Nikon D90 Review at Think Camera

September 8, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Think Camera has posted a full review of the Nikon D90 and its 18-105mm VR kit lens.

The D90 is a trophy of a middleweight camera, with the D-movie HD video mode tagging on an extra medal or two. No other DSLR in the world has a video feature to match; which no doubt opens up a whole new world of possibilities.

Announcing the Photography Bay Forum

September 7, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Last week, Photography Bay saw a site redesign.  Along with that design, as some of you have noticed, Photography Bay also gained a dedicated forum for Photography Bay readers and anyone else wishing to participate.

The forums are located at www.photographybay.com/forum.

I’ve been testing it for about a week with a handful of Photography Bay readers (Thanks guys!) and I think/hope that it’s ready for prime time.

Read on for further details and find out how you can score some free swag. [Read more…]

Canon Releasing 2 New DSLRs

September 7, 2008 By Eric Reagan

As we saw from Canon last week, it’s clear something new in the EOS lineup is coming.  What wasn’t immediately apparent, however, is that at least 2 new DSLRs are coming from Canon.  While the “Destined Evolution” page shows the outline of one new Canon DSLR, other Canon pages offer teasers for what appears to be a different DSLR.

Canon Europe shows a flash teaser when the page first loads of what appears to be a 1-series Canon DSLR.  Note there is no mode dial on the right side.

Canon Japan shows off the same sillouhette of what we think is the 5D successor. Note the mode dial on the right side.  This appears to be the same camera from the previously reported “Destined Evolution” page.

Clearly, it’s two different cameras.  This adds credence to the 2-camera rumor of a 5D successor plus a 3D or some other higher-end camera.  Given the recent introductions of the 1-series cameras, I think the possibility of 3D camera is genuine.

Not too much longer to wait though.  Photokina 2008 is closing in.  Stay tuned for the latest.

Nikon D90 High ISO Samples + Video

September 7, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Since the Nikon D90 is “Now Shipping“, I decided to head down to my local Wolf Camera to see if they had one in stock.  They did.

I stuck in a SanDisk Extreme III SD card and snapped the following sample shots.  All images are Fine JPEG shot in Program Mode.  Click the images to see the original file – they’re big files though.

Nikon D90 ISO 1600

Nikon D90 ISO 3200

Nikon D90 ISO 6400

One more at ISO 6400

See my initial impressions and a video sample after the break. [Read more…]

Nikon D90 “In Stock” at Ritz

September 7, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Ritz Camera is now listing the Nikon D90 as “In Stock”.  If you pre-ordered, hopefully, you’ll be getting yours in a day or two.

If you’re looking to get yours out the door from Ritz on Monday, you might want to get your order in.  Here’s the link.

Sorry, but Amazon and Adorama are still showing up as “pre-orders” as of the time of this post (12:30pm ET).

Canon EOS 7D Mockups

September 7, 2008 By Eric Reagan

UPDATE: The Canon 7D has been officially announced.  Read more on Photography Bay’s Canon 7D Reviews and Resources. Check availability at Amazon.com.

Several ad spots for the Canon EOS 7D surfaced around the forums today.  Unfortunately for those of you itching to see what’s next from Canon, they look to be faked mockup ads. Good Photoshop work though if they are fake.

As an aside, I’m not sure why Canon’s tag line would be “Delighting You Always.” (Keep the comments PG.)

A couple more (probably fake) ads after the break which show off the inconsistencies among the ads. [Read more…]

Canon 50D Movie Mode Possibilities

September 6, 2008 By Eric Reagan

An industrious forum poster over at DVX User dreamed up a little DIY project that will make you go “hmm”.

Depending on the capabilities of the Canon 50D HDMI output, this may or may not be possible; however, here’s his thoughts on the above mockup:

I imagine a Zeiss Planar glass (cause I know it locks at infinite focus)
mounted on a railsystem
with followfocus attached to the lens
a little mount adapter screws it to the
50d
the short hdmi cable goes to the portable hdmi recorder (haven’t looked into those products yet) also attached to rails

This guy thinks we might be able to use the increased resolution of the Canon 50D along with the HDMI output to do some fancy HD video.  (Sample video after the jump.) [Read more…]

Sony A900 and Zeiss 16-35mm f/2.8 in the Wild

September 5, 2008 By Eric Reagan

As usual, the eagle-eyed forum posters have dug up the inevitable – someone using the Sony A900 and Carl Zeiss 16-35mm f/2.8 lens in the wild.  While gaffer tape covers up most of the markings, there’s no mistaking this combo.

What say you?

Joby Expands Gorillapod Offerings

September 5, 2008 By Thursday Bram

Joby Gorillapod Original Flexible Camera TripodI’ve been a big fan of Joby’s Gorillapods for awhile now. They’ve recently come out with a new version, the Gorillapod Go-Go. The Go-Go is actually a little smaller and lighter than the original Gorillapod or the SLR Gorillapod. But it also comes with a couple of mounts not yet available with the older versions. Beyond the standard camera tripod mount, the Go-Go has a suction cup for temporarily holding other gear and a stickypad for a more permanent attachment.

The rumor is that they’ll be releasing the attachments as a separate product, for those of us who already own either the original version or the SLR.
