Sony Launches G Master Lenses for Full Frame E-Mount

February 3, 2016 By Eric Reagan

15H_GM_lens_image_06

Along with the killer new Sony A6300 announced today, Sony also introduced its new flagship G Master line of lenses with full frame coverage on Sony E-mount cameras. The new lenses include:

  • FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM ($2200)
  • FE 85mm f/1.4 GM ($1800)
  • FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS (price TBD)
  • 1.4x Teleconverter – SEL14TC (price TBD)
  • 2x Teleconverter – SEL20TC (price TBD)

This new trio looks like the perfect start for premium professional lenses on the Sony A7 Series. At least for the specs, the lenses appear to compete with professional lenses from Canon and Nikon.

The FE 24-70mm f/2.8 features a 9-blade aperture, while both the FE 85mm f/1.4 GM and FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS lenses feature an 11-blade aperture. The teleconverters are limited to compatibility with the 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS lens for now; however, I expect that compatibility to grow as Sony expands its G Master product line.

The FE 24-70mm f/2.8 and FE 85mm f/1.4 lenses will be available in March, while the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 lens and the teleconverters will ship in May. Check out the close-up photos and press release below. [Read more…]

Canon Should Build an A7 Camera Model with an EF Mount

October 5, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Canon-Sony-A7R-II-Mockup

Last week, I wrote about how Sony should build an A7 camera with a Canon EF mount. The premise behind the post was about Sony gaining market share and continuing to make bold moves. It’s a bit of a pipe dream but, holy crap, would that shake up the market.

What really needs to happen though is Canon should build a full frame mirrorless camera on par with the features we see in the Sony A7 series and that accepts EF lenses. [Read more…]

Sony Image Sensor Size Comparison

January 26, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Sony Image Sensor Size Comparison

Above is another one of the cool tech displays from Sony’s booth at CES. It shows the sensor size comparison for Sony cameras starting with a compact camera with a 1/2.3″ sensor on the right side and moving up to a full frame size sensor on the left side.

As many of you know, the full frame Sony 35mm sensor is found in the Sony A7 Series and the A99 SLT camera. The APS-C sensor is found in cameras like the Sony A6000 and A5100. Sony is using the CX Format nomenclature for 1″ sensors like what is found in the Sony RX100 and RX10.

Sony A7 II Specs Leaked?

November 19, 2014 By Eric Reagan

Sony A7 and A7R-8

It looks like the Sony A7 II specs have leaked out, which should replace the well-received Sony A7. The camera looks to get an improvement in the image stabilization and video departments.

What makes me raise my eyebrow the most is the inclusion of the XAVC S codec. There are no specs concerning video resolution of the A7 II; however, XAVC S is generally seen on Sony cameras that offer 4K video capture. Will Sony bring compressed, in-camera 4K video capture to the A7 line with the new A7 II? [Read more…]

10 Reasons Why a Professional Photographer Left Nikon and Started Shooting with Sony

November 9, 2014 By Eric Reagan

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wM_5nROeaw&w=700]

Check out this video from professional photographer Jason Lanier as he breaks down the 10 reasons why he stopped shooting Nikon DSLRs and mored to Sony mirrorless cameras. Jason says that he “has shot with Nikon his entire life and professional career. He switched to Sony in July 2014 (not due to a sponsorship) and hasn’t looked back since.”

Sony is obviously gaining ground on Canon and Nikon, and the Sony A7 series has made huge strides for the mirrorless camera market. What do you DSLR shooters think about Jason’s claims? Are you considering a switch to mirrorless, Sony or otherwise?

Sony 50MP Full Frame Sensors Coming in 2015…

October 12, 2014 By Eric Reagan

Sony A7s-5

New rumors suggest that Sony is primed to launch a 50MP-ish (some sources say 46MP) full frame camera in early 2015. Sony’s 36MP full frame A7R has been highly regarded for its image quality and affordable price. Likewise, the 36MP Sony sensor has been put to good use in the Nikon D810 and D800 models. Sony Lens Roadmap Shows Full Frame Commitment

September 28, 2014 By Eric Reagan

Sony Lens Roadmap 9.15.14 700

One of the few criticisms Sony’s A7 series receives is that there are not many native lenses available for the full frame cameras. Well, Sony is aiming to remedy some of that criticism by aggressively building out its full frame lens line in 2015.

In a new lens roadmap, Sony highlights its short term goal of 20 lenses in its FE line (that’s full frame E-mount lenses). I suspect we could start seeing these lenses launching as early as January 2015 at CES.
