Canon Working on Built-in Radio Triggers for Wireless Flash

August 16, 2010 By Eric Reagan

You had to know this one was coming, right?  For years now, DSLR manufacturers have been tied to wireless flash communication via  light-based transmission systems, which puts limits on the ability to take your flashes out of the line-of-sight of other flashes.  Of course, there are a plenty of workarounds – and there are third party solutions from the likes of PocketWizards and RadioPoppers.

But there has always been something missing with those other solutions.  Maybe it’s a little clunky to strap on those third-party devices?  Maybe there was some radio interference?  Something, however minor, just doesn’t quite function like the factory specs of the wireless flash system under ideal conditions.

A recently filed patent application with the USPTO reveals that Canon is working on a radio-based solution for its wireless flash system with transmitters built-in camera bodies. [Read more…]

New Canon Gear on August 17

August 15, 2010 By Eric Reagan

A tipster tells me that Canon will be launching “1 dslr, some lenses and lots of point and shoot” cameras on August 17, which word supposedly comes from a source within Canon.

I don’t think any of this is really groundbreaking as rumors and leaks of the 60D have been flying like crazy lately, and Canon Rumors has pegged the G12, S95, SX30, SX130 and other point and shoots for launch soon.

The date, however, is different than what has previously been mentioned (Aug. 24 or 26).  I guess we’ll know Tuesday.

If you have more info on the announcement details, feel free to pass it along via the contact form (you can put in fake email address if you don’t want to reveal your email).

Canon Press Event

Two days after Sony’s upcoming press event, Canon has also scheduled a press event.  Could this be the official unveiling of the (much leaked) Canon 60D?

Canon 60D Revealed?

August 11, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Is this the new Canon 60D?  It sure seems like a good candidate.  It also comports with previous rumors that suggested a tilting LCD – although this camera appears to have a vari-angle (i.e., tilt/swivel LCD) that flips out from the body.  This would add more credence to the rumored “optimized for video” design that we’ve previously heard about.  Although the aging 50D is definitely due for a replacement, I’m anxious to see the final specs and how/if the 60D will cannibalize the sales of the Canon 7D.

Fire away with your thoughts in the comments below.

More Rumored Canon 60D Specs

August 10, 2010 By Eric Reagan

More Canon 60D specs have trickled out of the rumor mill.  Canon Rumors received a tip regarding a closed-doors presentation of a pre-production 60D, which included an 18MP sensor (as found in the Canon 7D and Rebel T2i), a tilt display on the rear, and an overall “video optimized” theme to the new DSLR.

Of course, there’s no hard confirmation, but CR says that this source(s) has produced reliable info in the past.  Hopefully, we’ll know more soon.

More Canon 1Ds Mark IV Rumors

August 5, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Stephen Alvarez is at it again, adding more fuel to last week’s fire that the 1Ds Mark IV is being tested “in physically difficult conditions.”  Still no word on specs.

Stay tuned for more rumors and news as we approach Photokina 2010.

Canon and Nikon Lens Mugs

August 2, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Canon Lens Mug

These Canon and Nikon lens mugs have been popping up occasionally since the 2010 Winter Olympics.  They’ve generally been hit or miss on finding what you want in stock, and prices have been rather steep.

I just ordered a Canon 24-105mm mug from 100 Milligrams for $19.50.  Not bad at all.

Here’s the links to the different lenses over at 100 Milligrams:

Canon 1Ds Mark IV Rumored to Be in Field Testing

August 2, 2010 By Eric Reagan

National Geographic freelancer Steven Alvarez mentioned on his blog that he’s heard reports Canon has been field testing some 1Ds Mark IV cameras.  Nothing specific though.  So, just consider this a public service announcement.

Perhaps we’ll see a 1Ds Mark IV by Photokina 2010 to replace the aging Canon 1Ds Mark III, which has hit the bargain basement price of about $6100.

Canon 60D Nearing Launch, Confirmed by DxO?

July 29, 2010 By Eric Reagan

DXO 60D

Rumors of a Canon 60D situated in the EOS lineup below the 7D have been stirring in recent months.  However, what appears to be an unintentional leak at DxO adds significantly more weight to those rumors.

While I would expect this page to be updated soon to remove the 60D references, DxO has its “roadmap” for DxO Optics Modules slating the 60D and a number of lenses on schedule for support in November/December 2010.

That would be about right for a camera released in August/September of this year.

Look for lots more on the Canon 60D as we approach Photokina 2010.
