Canon EOS 7D Review

December 29, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Canon 7D

The Canon EOS 7D is a 18-megapixel DSLR featuring an APS-C format CMOS sensor.  At the time of its release, the 7D is situated in the EOS lineup between the 50D and the 5D Mark II.

The Canon 7D brings a number of improvements and new features to the Canon prosumer lineup.  Taking these advancements into account, Canon has finally produced a DSLR whose specs outshine its Nikon counterpart – in this case the Nikon D300s. [Read more…]

Vincent Laforet’s Nocturne Finally Gets Nod from Canon for Release + Behind the Scenes Footage

December 23, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Vincent Laforet dropped his short film ‘Nocturne‘ on the scene almost immediately after the Canon 1D Mark IV was announced back in October. The video created a huge amount of buzz in the photography and film making communities in large part because it was shot under available light in the dead of night at ISO 6400.

Then, inexplicably, Canon pulled the plug on the video.  [Read more…]

Sigma SD15 Release in February 2010?

December 23, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Sigma SD15

The latest rumor surrounding the Sigma SD15 (a camera that has been officially “announced”) have it set for release in February 2010.  That would make it roughly 2 years since the first rumors of this camera surfaced, and 1.5 years since the camera was officially announced by Sigma.

The Sigma SD15 replaces the Foveon-equipped Sigma SD14, which has been on the market since 2006. [Read more…]

Nikon D3s Goes To Space

December 21, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D3S

NASA is a big Nikon fan apparently, having previously sent the Nikon D2Xs to space.  NASA just placed an order for 11 Nikon D3S bodies and 7 Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 lenses.  That should compliment NASA’s stock of 76 D2Xs cameras nicely.

More details in the press release below. [Read more…]

Samsung NX10 Images Leaked

December 21, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Samsung NX10

Update #2:  As of 1/4/10, the Samsung NX10 has been officially announced.  For more details, click here.

Update: After this post was published, Samsung contacted me and requested the addition of the following statement: This information was not supplied by Samsung and does not represent an official announcement of the NX10. Final technical specifications and details regarding the camera system will be made available by authorized Samsung representatives at a later date, with the official launch of the product.

It looks like some images of a production model of the Samsung NX10 have leaked out onto the web via DPR forums.  The above image shows the smaller body design with no mirror in between the lens mount and the 14.6-megapixel sensor.

You can also see the video setting on the mode dial in the other images in the DPR forum.  It looks like a pretty nice design; however, not quite as small as you might expect from a mirrorless body.

We’ve been waiting a long time to get hands on a production model from the Samsung NX series.  It looks like we may be getting close to that actually happening.  Hopefully, we’ll see a release by the time CES 2010 rolls around and get to play with this new camera.

Sony A550 Review

December 17, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Sony A550

The Sony A550 is a 14.2-megapixel DSLR that boils down to a more expensive entry-level camera.  As with other Sony Alpha DSLRs, the A550 features a built-in stabilization system that uses sensor-shift functions rather than lens-based stabilization.  As a result, every lens you attach to the camera benefits from image stabilization – as opposed to Canon and Nikon, for which you must buy “stabilized lenses” that can be more expensive.

Another familiar feature on the Sony A550 is the articulating LCD screen.  Like the lower-level models, the A330 and A380, the A550’s LCD will tilt up and down, allowing you to hold the camera up high or down low and still be able to easily see the LCD screen.

A tilting LCD screen wouldn’t be much use without the ability to compose your scene on it.  Again, the A550 offers the same Live View system that I have loved since it was originally introduced on the A300 and A350.  In my opinion, no one does DSLR Live View better than Sony.  It just works intuitively and feels very natural for those moving from point and shoot cameras.
