The Hot Shoe Diaries is a book on getting the most out of those small hot shoe flashes from Joe McNally. I hate that it has taken so long to get around to writing a review about it, because it is an excellent book. [Read more…]

Honl Photo Speed System Review
The Honl Photo Speed System has been around for some time now. I’ve had the pleasure of using the system on and off for several months. The products are the creation of photographer David Honl and designed to be a fast and versatile set of tools for sculpting light when using hotshoe flashes.
The first impression that I get from the Honl Photo Speed System is that it’s a quality product. You open up the packages and find very tough nylon and plastic components. The straps, grids and snoots have traveled many miles in my camera bags and have shown resilience even through abuse. [Read more…]

Lenses and Gear for Shooting Events
Some of us that read this blog make a living or some extra income from shooting events. These events require specific tools: such as good, fast lenses at certain focal lengths. Today I received a question from someone that wants to go into event photography but wants to know what type of gear to get.
Hey Chris,
I’ve got a Canon 40D now and friends, people I meet and family are all asking me to shoot their events. They want anything from their parties, bbqs, baby christenings, etc. What equipment should I look into? Should I stay with my 28-135mm kit lens? Will I need a flash? I don’t want to spend too much money either.
-Mike
First off Mike, congratulations: while the fact that you have a nice big camera will encourage everyone around you to constantly bother you about taking their photos and then uploading them on Facebook and other sharing sites, you should be able to make some sort of profit from it all. There are a couple of factors and things that you need to keep in mind before going out there and shooting on top of buying equipment. [Read more…]

How to Use Fill-Flash in Macro Photography
The following post on the use of fill-flash in macro photography was written by professional photographer Ron Kruger. Learn more about Ron at the end of this post.
I’m an outdoor writer/photographer, and I’ve always admired those minuscule blossoms I see around my blinds and hides and along rivers and streams. This past spring, sort of as a sideline, or hobby with the hope of some potential profit, I embarked on a mission to record macro images of every tiny wildflower I could find.
As a professional, I’m always looking for ways to do things differently than the average photographer. One I’d like to share is fill-flash for macro, which we called flash-fill back in the day when you had to make all kinds of complicated readings and calculations to pull it off. I’m not talking about a dedicated macro ring flash, either, but your common, everyday external flash unit and/or your on-camera flash. Both work, and they work great together. [Read more…]
