Bower SFD926 TTL Flash Review
The Bower SFD926 TTL flash is a hot shoe flash that is available for just about every DSLR on the market now. At around $100, the SFD926 is an affordable alternative to the more expensive hot shoe flashes from Canon, Nikon and the likes.
The feature set is also rather impressive for a flash in this price range. The SFD926 will operate as a normal TTL flash, which means that your camera can communicate directly with the flash to provide commands for the correct amount of flash output needed for a proper exposure. Additionally, the SFD926 can be operated in manual mode with adjustments from full power down to 1/16 power (i.e., a 5-stop power range).
The SFD926 has an optical slave, which makes it an attractive option for the strobist-on-a-budget crowd who want to shoot in full manual across the power range. [Read more…]
Speedliter’s Handbook: Learning to Craft Light with Canon Speedlites – New Book
The Speedliter’s Handbook is a new book from Canon Speedlite specialist, Syl Arena.
The book has been in the works for nearly a year now, and just went to the printer last week. But it turned out to be much bigger than planned…
“It’s almost 400 pages, includes 800 photos, 100 diagrams, and 39 shoots detailed on 2-page spreads. If you shoot small flash (any brand), then 70% will be of interest. If you shoot Canon Speedlites, then 110% of the book will be of interest.” –Syl Arena
Speedliter’s Handbook: Learning to Craft Light with Canon Speedlites carries a retail price of $49.99; however, it is currently available for pre-order on Amazon.com at $31.49 and will ship just after Christmas.
Sigma EF-610 DG Super and EF-610 DG ST Flashes
At Photokina 2010 this week, Sigma announced a pair of new hotshoe flashes, the EF-610 DG Super and EF-610 DG ST.
Both new flashes feature a Guide Number of 61, manual flash mode and a TTL auto flash exposure with all popular DLSR systems.
The EF-610 DG ST gives you manual power control down to 1/16 power, while the EF-610 DG Super covers an 8-stop range that (assuming my finger counting is correct) gets you down to 1/128 power in manual mode. Additionally, the EF-610 DG Super features a modeling flash function, multi-pulse flash, TTL wireless flash, high speed sync and rear curtain sync.
For those reading between the lines, the EF-610 DG Super competes with the likes of the Canon 580EX II and Nikon SB-900, while the EF-610 DG ST matches up more with the Canon 430EX II and Nikon SB-600.
No word yet on price or availability for this new pair of flashes, but considering where they fit in the market, you can probably expect them to be priced a little below the first-party products noted above.

Nikon SB-700 Speedlight
Along with the new D7000, Nikon has announced a new Speedlight, the SB-700.
The Nikon SB-700 Speedlight looks to be sort of an SB-900 Jr., with the ability to use it as a Commander or Speedlight Remote in Nikon’s Creative Lighting System. The SB-700 offers a number of other improvements over the SB-600, which make it appear to be a reasonable alternative to the Nikon SB-900.
The Nikon SB-700 should be available in November 2010 at an initial retail price of $329.95. Check availability on Amazon.com.
There are plenty more details about this new Speedlight in the press release below. [Read more…]

Fuji HS10 Recommended External Flashes
One of the frequently recurring questions that I receive is “What flash should I get for the Fuji HS10?”
The Fuji HS10 features a hot shoe for an external flash; however, Fuji does not make a dedicated flash for the camera. Perhaps Fuji should think hard about making a flash for the next version of this camera.
I have inquired directly with Fuji regarding recommended external flashes, only to receive rather vague responses as to which flash models are appropriate for the HS10. As a result of testing, obtaining recommendations from manufacturers and corresponding with HS10 users, I’ve compiled a short list of recommended external flashes for the Fuji HS10. [Read more…]

Lights, Camera, Capture – Book Review
Lights, Camera, Capture is a book by Bob Davis that discusses creative lighting techniques. While Davis discusses many lighting equipment options, his primary focus is on Canon Speedlites using TTL metering. And, while the techniques that apply to Canon Speedlites are prevalent throughout the book, the info will easily translate to Nikon shooters using the Nikon Creative Lighting System as well.
