Olympus XZ-10 and M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75-300mm f/4.8-6.7 II Lens Coming Soon

New leaks point to a new Olympus XZ-10 compact camera and 75-300mm Micro Four Thirds lens coming next week during the CP+ show in Japan.

The XZ-10 is rumored to be a high-end compact camera that will likely serve as a replacement or companion model to the Olympus XZ-2.

The new lens will be the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75-300mm f/4.8-6.7 II Micro Four Thirds lens that will be a 150-600mm equivalent zoom lens. The first version of this lens is already listed as discontinued.

Blackmagic Design, “Kodak” and Others Join Micro Four Thirds System Standards Group

BMCC Micro Four Thirds

It has been close to 5 years since the introduction of the Micro Four Thirds system by Olympus in August 2008. In that time, cameras from Olympus and Panasonic have developed a strong hold on the mirrorless camera market.

Now, five additional manufacturers are joining the Micro Four Thirds System Standards Group, two of which we have heard recent news about.

  1. Blackmagic Design
  2. JK Imaging
  3. Photron Limited
  4. SVS-Vistek
  5. ViewPLUS

Blackmagic previously announced the Blackmagic Cinema Camera in a Micro Four Thirds mount, which followed the initial Canon EF mount BMCC version. Additionally, JK Imaging recently reveals plans to bring a Kodak Micro Four Thirds camera to market through its licensed use of the Kodak brand.

Olympus Adds New 17mm f1.8 Lens to Lineup

The Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm f/1.8 lens is a new Micro Four Thirds lens for its PEN system of mirrorless cameras.  As such, it serves as a 34mm equivalent when compared to full frame cameras.

The new lens retails for $499.99 and should ship in December.  It is available for pre-order here at B&H Photo.

Olympus OM-D E-M5 Version 1.5 Firmware Update

Olympus has issued a firmware update for the OM-D E-M5, which offers the following improvements:

1)      Decreased operating sounds in photo ready mode

2)      Improved 5-axis stabilization when using OM lenses with an adapter, even in Movie mode

3)      All updates up to version 1.2 are included

You can get the firmware update through Olympus’ software updater.

Panasonic GH3 Officially Unveiled

The Panasonic GH3 is a new 16MP Micro Four Thirds camera with both still image and video prowess.   The GH3 features powerful 1080/60p 50Mbps IPB video capture and 1080/24p at 72Mbps ALL-I video capture.

The GH3 body is magnesium alloy and weather sealed and offers an OLED monitor and an EVF.  What’s more, the GH3 packs all of this into a $1299 price tag – available for pre-order here at Amazon.com.

Alongside the GH3, Panasonic is also announcing a new 35-100mm f/2.8 lens (70-200mm equivalent) for the Micro Four Thirds mount.  The lens, combined with the existing 12-35mm f/2.8 lens, makes a formidable combo (both of which feature optical image stabilization) to match up against full frame kits of the 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8 flavors.  The new 35-100mm f/2.8 lens retails for $1499 and is available for pre-order here at Amazon.com.

Olympus E-PL5 Officially Announced with Ultra-thin 15mm Lens

The Olympus E-PL5 is a new Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera with a 16MP LiveMOS sensor.  The new mirrorless camera sports an all-metal body, a 170-degree tilting LCD and captures 1080i HD video.

Olympus also introduced a new body cap alongside the E-PL5 that sports a built-in 15mm f/8 lens, which means you can grab a quick shot without a bulky lens (you know, since it’s a lens too…).

Blackmagic Cinema Camera MFT (Micro Four Thirds Mount) Announced

Blackmagic has unveiled a new version of its Cinema Camera with a Micro Four Thirds lens mount.  It will carry the same $2995 price as the Canon EF mount version and will be available in December.

This is a good move on Blackmagic’s part because the sensor crop has been the biggest limitation for the Canon EF mount.  A Micro Four Thirds mount puts the camera into a range of lenses that are more appropriate focal lengths for its sensor size.
