ArchRig is a New, Cheaper Take on HDSLR Follow Focus

August 28, 2011 By Eric Reagan

ArchRig Follow Focus

The ArchRig system is a new rig and follow focus combo unit that looks to somewhat simplify on-the-fly focus adjustments when shooting HDSLR video.

Instead of a geared focus mechanism attached to the side of the lens, a metal arch goes over the top of the lens and use stop-pins to serve as focus marks for the lens lever.  Additional focus marks can be made on the arch using a dry-erase marker.

Check out the video below to see how it works. [Read more…]

Mosaic Engineering VAF-5D2

If you’ve shot any reasonable amount of video with the 5D Mark II, then you have likely encountered aliasing and moiré pattern interference.  Mosaic Engineering has built a filter that fits inside the Canon 5D Mark II and actually fixes these problems.

Shooting HDSLR Video with a Glidecam

August 19, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Glidecam 2000 Pro

I picked up a Glidecam 2000 a couple of months ago after talking with the Glidecam guys at NAB.  One of the operators at the booth gave me a short course in how to use it effectively, which turned out to be very helpful as I’ve been learning the ropes.

I haven’t arrived by any means, but I’ve started getting some pretty fun and usable shots with it.  My church’s VBS was a couple of weeks ago and I took the opportunity to have a bit of live practice with it.

Below is the VBS recap video we had for the parents the Sunday after. [Read more…]

How to Import AVCHD Files from a Memory Card or Hard Drive in Final Cut Pro X

August 14, 2011 By Eric Reagan

FCP X Camera Import

FCP X Camera Import Window

For all of its faults, Final Cut Pro X offers much better native file compatibility than its predecessor.  However, all files aren’t equal when working in Final Cut Pro X.  Some files, like the .MTS files produced from AVCHD video capture, require you to take a couple of extra steps to get them into FCP X.

Here are a some simple tips to make it smoother to get those .MTS files off of a memory card or hard drive – and without the need to connect the camera to your Mac. [Read more…]
