How to Create the Cinematic Look in Premiere Pro

January 4, 2017 By Eric Reagan

In this video from Peter McKinnon, we get a look at a pretty basic workflow of creating a cinematic look in Adobe Premiere Pro. Across the series of color grading tutorials in this video, he pretty much lives in the Basic Correction panel of Premiere Pro instead of getting into the three-way color wheels, which we commonly see used for emphasizing color in highlights and shadows.

While not the most complex grading method, I think it’s a great starting point for dipping your toes into color grading and getting good results. Of course, it all starts with good footage, which you need to get in-camera first.

How to Fix Too Much Red on Faces Using Only Lightroom

October 29, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Here’s a quick video in which I walk through a very simple technique for correcting too much red in faces using just Lightroom.

I picked this tip up from Aaron Nace’s tutorial on a similar technique in Photoshop. I generally try to avoid going to Photoshop if it is something I can deal with in Lightroom. It’s just faster and a preferred piece of software for me.

If you need to do this in Photoshop, check out this Phlearn video for an explanation of how to accomplish this inside Photoshop, where you’ll have much more control in isolating colors.

Tiffen Dfx 3 Video and Photo Plug-in Review

Tiffen Dfx 3 Premiere Pro Film Stocks Panel Comparison

Tiffen Dfx 3 Premiere Pro Film Stocks Panel Comparison

Tiffen Dfx v3 is a suite of filters and effects that is available for popular video and photo applications as a plug-in or a standalone application.  Over the past few months, I have been using the software suite primarily in Premiere Pro CS5.5.  However, I have also touched on the standalone app and as well as the After Effects and Lightroom plug-in integration.

As with any software or plug-in, understanding the capabilities of it is paramount to fully utilizing the application to meet the needs of your workflow.  I don’t pretend to have an exhaustive understanding of all that’s within Tiffen Dfx 3 at this point; however, I have used it enough to realize where it meets many of my needs and makes life easier in post-production. Technicolor CineLights and CineLooks Color Correction Tools

Technicolor CineLights at CES

Deep inside the Technicolor booth at CES 2012 was a small table showing off some new color correction software from the same company that brought CineStyles to our Canon HDSLRs last year.

Technicolor CineLights is a program based on Technicolor’s award-winning DP Lights system and is intended for quick color correction such as dailies.  It’s not really intended as a finish grading tool; however, it does offer some keying, three-way color correction and a Look Library as part of CineLooks.
