This Video Shows How Tiny the Canon Rebel SL1 Really Is

July 15, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Canon Rebel SL1

This cool Canon commercial from Korea shows off the impressive size of the Canon Rebel SL1 (aka Canon 100D). I was impressed with the Rebel SL1 in my initial hands-on review and remain impressed with it after spending a few weeks with it. Expect a full review soon.

Watch a RED EPIC Sensor Get Fried by a Laser

July 13, 2013 By Eric Reagan

We’ve posted these warnings before. The cool lasers at concerts will fry your camera’s sensor. Previous warnings have come in the form of Canon 5D Mark II and other HDSLRs getting cooked. This time, however, a RED EPIC (about a $20k camera) got fried at a concert. [Read more…]

Watch This Video of Thieves Stealing a Lens Right Off a Photographer’s Camera on His Neck

July 10, 2013 By Eric Reagan

This is a crazy operation in Russia where a group of thieves coordinate to distract a photographer while taking what looks like his Nikon 70-200 right off the camera that’s handing on his neck.

At first, we see the photographer/tourist approached by a group of people putting things in front of him in an attempt to distract.

Step 1 Distraction

Then, one of the thieves slips his hands under the papers held up and removes the lens. [Read more…]

Canon 70D Top

It looks like Canon has finally developed a live view and video AF system for its DSLRs that will be useful with the new Canon 70D. These embedded demo videos come from the Polish site Optyczne. They show off the new 70D’s Dual Pixel AF system with the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens and the EF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro lens.

Check out all the short videos of the AF tests below. [Read more…]

The Basics of a One Light Setup

June 21, 2013 By Eric Reagan

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAbSn7VkhmY&w=640&h=360]

Here’s a short video from Jay P. Morgan (of The Slanted Lens) on using a one light setup. Interestingly, he is shooting a model with a Canon 1D C with 4K video and pulling stills from the video frames. While he was shooting video in this session, the same lighting principles apply to still photography and strobes. [Read more…]

Faux Slider Shots with just a Tripod

June 16, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Here’s a great little trick for getting some motion in your video shots even if you don’t have a slider or a jib. I’ve used a tripod tilted up on two legs quite a bit for cheating dolly-in and dolly-out shots, but the Fenchel & Janisch folks take it a step further with movements along other axes for some cool jib-esque shots. The suggestion of shooting a higher frame rate to smooth out any imperfections in the camera movement when conformed to a lower frame rate is good as well.

The Zoom H6: Better Preamps and 6 XLR Inputs Make It a Huge Upgrade to the H4n

June 15, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Zoom H6 Recorder

The Zoom H4n has been a staple of the HDSLR dual-system audio realm since the introduction of the 5D Mark II. Over the past few years though, the market has somewhat left the H4n behind with units like the Tascam DR-100mkII and Olympus LS-100 delivering better controls and a lower noise floor. [Read more…]
