Canon Releases Firmware

September 2, 2008 By Thursday Bram

Canon announced a firmware update for the EOS Rebel XSi / 450 digital SLR camera. Update version 1.0.9 fixes several problems that have been reported to Canon with Auto Exposure Bracketing, Live View and Playback. The exact fixes are:

Fixes a phenomenon in which AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) shooting does not operate normally under specific conditions.
Fixes a phenomenon in which the Live View exposure simulation warning indication does not properly display during Live View shooting.
Fixes a phenomenon in which images cannot be played back after continuous shooting when a printer is connected to the camera or a video output terminal is used.

The previous firmware version is 1.0.4 — if your camera uses this version, updating is recommended.

Further information about the update is available on Canon’s update page.

Sony A900 on September 3rd?

September 1, 2008 By Eric Reagan

This is the first time we’ve heard of September 3rd as an official announcement date for the A900; however, a DPR forum poster says he’s got third hand or so info on the A900 being available in China on September 3rd.

according to retailers of Sony DSLRs in Suzhou China (which is the city next to Shanghai), the Sony Gallery shop in Shanghai should be stocking the A900 from the 3rd.

[via DPR]

I’ll note though that the most reliable-sounding info we’ve heard for the A900 unveiling was September 9-10.

Either way, it won’t be long and we’ll stay on top of the latest developments. Expect to see lots more A900 coverage as we approach Photokina 2008.

For more on the Sony A900 flagship DSLR, stay tuned to Photography Bay’s Sony A900 page.

Rumors of RED Competition for D90

September 1, 2008 By Thursday Bram

RED, the company known for its ‘future-proof’ camcorders, will be adding a DSLR line, according to comments made by Jim Jannard on the company’s forums.

Jannard’s comments focused on RED’s next generation Mysterium “Monstro” sensor. Monstro will be offered as a free upgrade to the Mysterium-X piece shipping in Epic, but is also slated for a new DSLR camera. Further hints seem to indicate that RED’s new DSLR is meant to compete with the Nikon D90 — it seems likely that the camera will shoot both stills and motion.

At a guess, a RED DSLR would at least have adapters for Nikon and Canon lenses, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Lensbaby 2.0 and 3G Review

September 1, 2008 By Eric Reagan

The Lensbaby 2.0 and 3G are selective focus SLR lenses, which have a flexible “lens barrel” to give you that smooth out of focus effect in portions of your images.  Basically, you bend, push and pull the lens to move the “Sweet Spot” where you want it and blur the remaining areas of the image. Site Update

August 31, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Photography Bay just refreshed its design in favor of what I think is a cleaner and better design.  If you’re reading this post by RSS or email delivery, click on through and see what it looks like.

We’re still working out all the gremlins of the code, so please let us know in the comments below of anything that looks out of place or broken.  I don’t think there’s anything major still around, but I’ve already noticed a couple minor issues, and if it appears to be too difficult to modify on the site live, we may go back to the previous design for a bit until we get things sorted out.

[Update: If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, there are a number of bugs that you will encounter and this site cannot be used to its full capabilities.  I am trying to fix some of these bugs, but I doubt that I’ll get to all of them. IE 6 was introduced in 2001 – it’s really time for a new browser.

At the very least, I recommend that you upgrade to Internet Explorer 7.  If you are interested in the best web browsing experience, I recommend going with Firefox.  You can view the download links and learn more about better browsing options at SaveTheDevelopers.org. ]

[Update #2: We are experiencing some problems with comments generally and instances where comments are being directed to the wrong posts.  We are working on a solution. Fixed.]

Additionally, I’d be interested to hear what you think about the new design.  Drop your comments and derogatory remarks in the comments.

Finally, I thought I’d let you know that a new feature is coming the Photography Bay soon (hopefully in the next day or two), so stay tuned.
