Magic Lantern Update: 1080p Raw Video Works on 5D Mark III

May 13, 2013 By Eric Reagan

5D-Mark-III

The Magic Lantern crew just made a breakthrough of 24p raw video on the 5D Mark III. The earlier catch was that there was a limitation on the resolution that left the 5D Mark III raw video capture just short of the full 1080p mark.

Not so fast though…

Just hours after the initial revelation, Magic Lantern revealed that it’s possible to hit the holy grail of 14-bit raw video at 1920×1080 resolution and 24p with a 1000x CF card. [Read more…]

Canon 5D Mark III Now Shoots 24p Raw Video with Magic Lantern Firmware

May 12, 2013 By Eric Reagan

5D-Mark-III

The Magic Lantern guys never cease to amaze with what they can pull out of Canon HDSLRs. In the latest Magic Lantern firmware that’s in development, the Canon 5D Mark III now manages to capture raw video at 24p. This comes after it was previously teased running at lower frame rates.

The resolution isn’t quite up to full 1920 x 1080; however, 720p is no problem. Additionally, they have been able to record up to 1928×850 with continuous recording. Bumping the resolution up to 1928×902 only allows for 700 frames of capture (or 29 seconds) before recording stops.

For an example of what raw video offers over Canon’s internal ALL-I recording, check out the below sample videos. [Read more…]

Adobe’s Big Creative Cloud Move – Livecast

May 11, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Creative Cloud

I’m going to be on with Jimmy Beltz over at PhotoTips for a Livecast as we talk about Adobe’s new Creative Cloud decision. Jimmy tells me that he’s spoken with Adobe and they would be watching the Livecast as well.

We’ll be talking through the specifics of the new Creative Cloud move, and will take questions and comments from others who join in.

If you want to join us, we’ll be kicking off at 1PM ET. You can find the Livecast here on Spreecast.

If you missed it, the replay is embedded below.

Updated: I just wanted to follow-up on a point where I misspoke. Someone asked a question about the download and installation process of Creative Cloud apps. Specifically, the question was whether it was a DMG file for Macs. I said it was; however, it’s actually some kind of application manager from Adobe that installs the individual apps without having to deal with DMG files. Sorry for the mix up.

Adobe Creative Cloud and the Death of Boxed Software

May 9, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Adobe Creative Cloud

What a week it has been.

Many pro and amateur photographers, along with many other creative pros and enthusiasts, woke up Monday morning looking forward to what might come out of the Adobe MAX conference as the latest Adobe products were set to be unveiled.

Adobe teased us for several weeks leading up to Adobe MAX, including an impressive showing of new video products at NAB 2013. Many of us were nearly on pins and needles with anticipation based on what we had seen thus far.

I mean, this stuff just keeps better and better.

And Then… The Hammer Dropped.

Adobe killed perpetual licenses of almost all of its creative software. Creative Cloud is the future. The only future.

Sure, you can still buy CS6 licenses, and you will own those in perpetuity. Although, you won’t get the whiz-bang new features for CS6. Ever.

Deep down, most of us knew this was coming. However, I don’t think many of us guessed it would happen this year. I sure didn’t. [Read more…]
