Canon Rumors has a tip that a new superzoom lens could be coming to the EF-S mount in the form of an 18-300 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM model, which should serve as a replacement to the EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS model.
The lens should get the new STM motor found in the 40mm f/2.8 STM and 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM models. Having used both of these lenses, I would welcome the addition of a STM-equipped superzoom model. The 18-135mm STM lens proved surprisingly snappy with AF speed and acquisition in my experience with it.
Along with an EF-S superzoom, there is also word that a new superzoom for the EF mount could show up as well – and be a bit more affordable and less bulky than the current EF 28-300mmL superzoom in Canon’s lineup. Availability on these lenses, however, is rumored to be in the second half of 2013.
Are these lenses that you are looking for? Or, do the current lenses in Canon’s lineup meet your needs?
What’s the ideal zoom range and price points for Canon superzoom lenses?

Canon is serving up a $400 instant rebate on the Canon 5D Mark II, which is likely being pushed aside now that the Canon 6D has landed. This puts the Canon 5D Mark II body at $1799 shipped and the 5D Mark II + 24-105mm f/4L kit lens at $2499 shipped.
This massive price drop makes the 5D Mark II the cheapest full frame camera on the market in spite of the low starting prices of the new Canon 6D and Nikon D600.

Photography Bay reader Mayeul Akpovi is at it again with the second part to his solid timelapse work in Paris. Paris in Motion (Part II) continues with the stunning scenery we showed you in Part I back in August.
He moved the tripod by hand for 3500 shots that made up this video. And, in some cases, he handheld the camera and moved himself in as straight a line as possible to create the moving timelapse effect.
As you can see in the below video, this movement resulted in some very shaky timelapse footage. However, it was easily saved by stabilizing the timelapse in Adobe After Effects for some stunning results. The large files from the 5D Mark II make it easy to apply stabilizing filters like Adobe’s warp stabilizer thanks to plenty of look-around space provided by the 5K+ resolution.
[vimeo https://vimeo.com/50577172 w=640&h=360]For those curious, Mayeul used the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L and 17-40mm f/4L for the shots that built this timelapse.
Thanks for sending this in Mayeul. You can check out more of Mayeul’s work here on Vimeo.

Sony’s new HDR-AS15 and HDR-AS10 action cams are shipping and production models are in the wild now. I’ve had a little time this evening the check out the HDR-AS15 and have to say that it’s a slick little camera that should give GoPro and Contour some serious competition. [Read more…]
