Tamron 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD

December 9, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Tamron has announced a new 18-270mm travel zoom lens for DSLRs.  The 15x zoom lens features a Piezo ultrasonic motor for fast and silent AF.  It also features Tamron’s vibration compensation to reduce camera shake image blur.

The new lens should be available in December for Canon and Nikon mount versions, while a Sony version of the lens is planned for a later date.

Canon Freeze Tag

December 6, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The above Canon commercial from Director Saman Keshavarz features a game of “freeze tag” using Canon cameras. As part of the commercial, they handed out Canon cameras to various people running through the halls, with many of their shots making it into the final cut of the commercial.

The behind the scenes video is embedded below. [Read more…]

PhotoFast G-Monster X Drive USB 3.0 Review

December 5, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The PhotoFast G-Monster X Drive is a USB 3.0 enclosure for CF cards and 1.8″ hard drives.  Essentially, the G-Monster X Drive turns a CF card or micro-sized hard drives into an ultra-compact, high speed hard drive.

Recently, I added a USB 3.0 PCIe adapter and an external USB 3.0 hard drive to my desktop PC as a media drive for video editing.  So far, it has worked very well – with no discernable difference in performance from my internal hard drives.  I have since become a big fan of USB 3.0 tech and was glad to hear about the G-Monster X Drive from Photofast. Red Scarlet S35 Renamed, Re-priced

December 4, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The yet-to-be-released, Red Scarlet S35, has been redubbed by Red Leader, Jim Jannard, as the EPIC Light.  As he puts it, the price and features have changed as well.

The Scarlet S35 was originally announced in late 2008 and was spec’d with a 5120 x 2700 resolution Super 35 sensor that would capture 5k footage at 30 fps (w/ 72fps burst rates).  The initial price point for the Scarlet S35 was $7000 for the body (brain) only and would be available in Canon, Nikon, Red and PL mount options.

No word on the revised specs or price; however, according to Jannard, we should know something next week.

Vincent Laforet Shoots Boot Commercial at 600fps

December 4, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The above commercial is the latest creations from Vincent Laforet, who you may recall launched the HDSLR frenzie with his short film Reverie in the Fall of 2008 (shot on the 5D Mark II).  Laforet served as the director of photography on this commercial for Famous Footwear.  It was shot on a Phantom HD Gold camera at 600 frames per second, which required 250,000 watts of light to get the proper exposure.

Laforet has a nice tech write-up on his blog here, along with a behind the scenes video.
