Lightroom for iPad? Adobe says: It’s Hard to Make It Work

June 11, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Over on his blog today, John Nack, Principal Product Manager, Adobe Photoshop,  briefly spoke about the huge demand for a Lightroom App for the Apple iPad and how hard that it is to make it work right.  Adobe’s Terry White had previously given us a wink and a nod that we might see Lightroom soon on the iPad, and Nack’s brief commentary suggests Adobe is hard at work to make it happen. However, citing Camera Bits’ troubles, it looks Abode is running into similar road blocks that other app developers have faced when it comes to making a truly worthwhile app for photographers.

Head on over to John Nack’s blog to see his thoughts, and speculate as you see fit.

Canon In-Camera HDR Maps Single Exposure to Individual Pixels

June 11, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Talk about changing the way HDR is done . . . .

A recently published Canon patent application (see USPTO Appl. No. 12/630,594) reveals a method for altering exposure values at the pixel level, which would allow Canon to produce a camera that captures a much wider dynamic range with a single image.

The lengthy patent application spells out a process whereby the camera captures a preliminary image with normal exposure values and then evaluates the exposure level across the entire image.  After creating an exposure map of the scene, the camera alters the exposure amount at the pixel level for the primary HDR image capture. Understanding Photography Field Guide – Book Review

June 10, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Over the past few years, I have given much praise to Bryan Peterson’s book, Understanding Exposure, as a practical resource for anyone looking to get more out of his or her camera.  It is, in my opinion, the best book for anyone new to DSLRs.  In the same vein, I can highly recommend Peterson’s new book, Understanding Photography Field Guide.

For my take on why this book is so great, read on. [Read more…]

Sony A290 & A390 Announced

June 9, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Sony has announced two new additions to its Alpha series of DSLRs.  The A290 is the base model for the Alpha lineup, featuring a 14.2 megapixel CCD sensor.  The A390 offers the same image sensor, but adds Sony’s popular (and effective) quick AF live view function in combination with a 2.7″ tilting LCD.  Both cameras otherwise share the same body and controls, which (fortunately) includes a redesigned grip over the predecessor A330 and its siblings.

The A290 and A390 should be available in July 2010 at an initial retail price of $500 and $600, respectively.

More details in the press release below. [Read more…]

Nikon Coolpix S3000 Review

June 9, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The Nikon Coolpix S3000 is a 12-megapixel, ultra-compact camera.  The S3000 is quite a basic point and shoot camera that’s really just a step or so up from the bottom-end Nikon L22.  The S3000 has a decent 4x optical zoom, equivalent to a 27-108mm zoom range on a 35mm camera.

If you’re looking for cheap and thin in your digital camera, read on to see if the Nikon S3000 works for you. [Read more…]
