Canon 53MP DSLRs, New Rebel, Lenses & More Due Next Week

January 27, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Canon-High-MP-DSLR-Rumors

[UPDATE 1/30/15: The Canon 5Ds and 5Ds R have leaked out.]

Next week should turn out to be a big one for Canon. According to Canon Rumors, we should see several new cameras that could actually shake up the market again. Purportedly, these cameras will arrive on Friday, February 6, 2015.

The previously rumored 5D Mark III replacement cameras are believed to feature full frame 53MP sensors. Now the rumored specs suggest the line will be split as with and without an AA filter. Additionally, the next Rebel camera, as a replacement for the Canon Rebel T5i is expected to arrive. Canon is also rumored to release a very wide EF 11-24mm f/4L lens.

Will the Canon EOS M3 finally bring a functional AF system to Canon’s mirrorless line? The first effort was severely lacking and the US did not even get to experience the Canon EOS M2, presumably because the EOS M was so poorly received. I hope/suspect Canon has learned from those failed efforts and delivers a competent mirrorless camera that will compete with the rest of the market.

Finally, various PowerShot cameras should be announced alongside the other pro gear. No word on specifics of them though.

Stay tuned.

Canon 6D Available in New Kit Option

January 19, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Canon 6D with 24-105mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens

Amid the recent announcements of Canon’s new point and shoot cameras in early January, I missed that Canon also made the 6D available in a kit with the new-ish EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. The new kit runs $2199 and should be available in early February. Check it out here at B&H Photo.

This new kit option makes a lot of sense and I think most of us saw this one coming when Canon announced the lower-tier 24-105mm STM lens earlier in 2014. I’m not sure why Canon didn’t start offering it from day one. Perhaps they wanted to clear out some stock with the 24-105mm L kit lens before packaging the new lens with it.

The 6D remains available with the pricier 24-105mm f/4L lens as well for $2399. And that kit is actually on sale through January 31 for $2099 after a $300 mail-in rebate.

Major Canon 1D C Price Drop Coming?

January 15, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Canon 1D C

Canon Hong Kong appears to have dropped the price of the Canon EOS 1D C by a about $8,000 HKD from $61,999 HKD to $54,000 HKD, which is equivalent to roughly $7,000 USD. These reports come from local Canon dealers who are supposedly legitimately selling the camera at the new retail price. There has been no corresponding drop in the US – yet. [Read more…]

How to Shoot Timelapse on the Canon 7D Mark II

January 14, 2015 By Eric Reagan

One of the great new features on the Canon 7D Mark II is the ability to shoot timelapse photos without the need for the overpriced Canon TC-80N3, which was required on prior Canon pro and prosumer DSLRs if you wanted to shoot in interval mode.

However, when the Canon 7D Mark II was initially announced, there was some confusion about its timelapse capabilities because some of the initial specs and documentation referenced that it could be programmed to capture photos in intervals between 1 and 99 images. That would suck and be pretty much a pointless feature since a second of video footage from a timelapse would contain at least 24 images (e.g., 1080p video at 24fps).  [Read more…]
