PhotoFast CF and SD Cards Review

October 7, 2009 By Eric Reagan

I have been using a few memory cards from PhotoFast over the past few weeks alongside my usual mix of Lexar, Kingston and SanDisk cards. Specifically, the PhotoFast GMonster 533x 32GB and 533x Plus 16GB CF cards have spent a lot of time in my Canon 5D Mark II and a Nikon D300s that I’ve had on hand.  Additionally, I’ve tried out the PhotoFast 16GB Class 10 SD/SDHC card. Wacom Adds Multi-Touch To Bamboo Tablets

September 25, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Wacom Bamboo Multi-touch Tablet

Wacom has added multi-touch capabilities to its popular line of Bamboo tablets. There are now 2 tablets in the Bamboo family that now offer multi-touch capabilities – the Bamboo Touch; and the Bamboo Pen and Touch.

With the new Bamboo Touch, you can navigate your PC or Mac in a totally different manner than using a mouse.  It works much like the multi-touch screen on an iPhone.  The Bamboo Touch uses 9 key gestures to do things like click, zoom, scroll and rotate.  It also has 4 programmable buttons to take care of common actions.

Bamboo Pen and Touch has two sensors, one for pen and one for multi-touch.  What’s more, the tablet automatically recognizes when you are using your fingers or pen on the tablet’s surface.

The Wacom Bamboo Touch carries an initial retail price of $69, while the Bamboo Pen and Touch runs $99.  Check availability on Amazon.com:

Bamboo Pen and Touch

My first take on these multi-touch products is that they are quite cool and could be used productively.  I have an older Bamboo tablet that I break out for image editing sometimes, but the multi-touch capabilities of this new series give me the hope that I might one day soon be able to ditch my mouse for good.  We’ll have to wait and see how the product performs in real world use to make that call, but I happily welcome effort from Wacom  on this new feature.

Lenses and Gear for Shooting Events

August 12, 2009 By Chris Gampat

Some of us that read this blog make a living or some extra income from shooting events. These events require specific tools: such as good, fast lenses at certain focal lengths. Today I received a question from someone that wants to go into event photography but wants to know what type of gear to get.

Hey Chris,

I’ve got a Canon 40D now and friends, people I meet and family are all asking me to shoot their events. They want anything from their parties, bbqs, baby christenings, etc. What equipment should I look into? Should I stay with my 28-135mm kit lens? Will I need a flash? I don’t want to spend too much money either.

-Mike

First off Mike, congratulations: while the fact that you have a nice big camera will encourage everyone around you to constantly bother you about taking their photos and then uploading them on Facebook and other sharing sites, you should be able to make some sort of profit from it all. There are a couple of factors and things that you need to keep in mind before going out there and shooting on top of buying equipment. [Read more…]

Camera Bags For Different Photographers

July 17, 2009 By Chris Gampat

Not long ago, laptops to accommodate to your different photographic needs was blogged about. This time, we’re talking about camera bags. In reality, there is no need for a large backpack if you’ve got only one camera body and only a couple of lenses. Something more along the lines of a messenger bag can suffice. Depending on your daily shooting styles/methods, your bag should be able to provide you with the essential package to do your job. Here are some great bags to look into:

National Geographic NG 2343 Earth Explorer Small Shoulder Bag

If you’ve got a DSLR with one lens and a couple of other accessories then his shoulder bag will suffice for you perfectly. Made out of padded cotton hemp, it is tough enough for most traveling needs of a photojournalist using only one body without a flash and that can head back to the office to edit shots.

Because of the small size, you cannot shove a laptop in here. However, it can suffice perfectly if you’ve got a Micro 4/3rds camera with a lens in which case you might be able to shove a Sony VAIO P into the bag somehow or another if you pack correctly. A setup like that will allow you to do your work from anywhere. Available for $60.00. [Read more…]
