Memoto Camera

The Memoto camera is a new, wearable 5MP camera that is roughly the size of a post stamp and is designed to capture an image every 30 seconds.  It packs in GPS and an accelerometer, which appropriately orients the images depending on just how you wear the camera.  One you connect the camera to your computer, it uploads the images to Memoto’s servers and organizes them for your search and browsing access via iOS/Android apps or a web browser.

October 16, 2012 By Eric Reagan

GoPro HERO3

GoPro just revealed its Hero3 Black Edition action cam and really stepped up the game.  The Hero3 is 30% smaller and 25% lighter than the Hero2 and it sports a 2x faster image processor. The Hero3 is the first action cam to shoot 4K video.  Frame rates and resolutions include:

  • 4K at 12fps
  • 2.7K at 30/25/24fps
  • 1440p at 48/30/35/24fps
  • 1080p at 60/50/48/30/25/24fps
  • 960p at 100/48fps
  • 720p at 120/100fps
  • 854x480p at 240fps

The GoPro Hero3 also includes built-in WiFi for control via remote or by using the GoPro iOS and Android apps.  The Hero3 sports a sharper lens and reduced distortion, as well as improved sound over the Hero2.

The Hero3 Black Edition retails for $400 and will ship Monday, October 22.  You can check availability on GoPro’s website and at B&H Photo.

There is also a Silver Edition and a White Edition, priced at $300 and $200, respectively.  Both of these models offer max resolution of 1080/30p and will also do 720p at 60fps.

The key differences between the Silver and White Editions are photo resolution and Protune compatibility.  The Silver Edition offers 11MP still image capture while the White Edition offers 5MP still image capture.  Additionally, the Silver Edition offers compatibility with Protune as well as control over white balance.

“The most epic news in GoPro history drops tonight. Ready to be blown away?”

October 16, 2012 By Eric Reagan

GoPro Hero3 Tease

That’s a quote from GoPro’s Facebook page about a half hour ago.  It has already accumulated over 4000 likes and 700 comments from GoPro fans teeming with excitement.

Recall the recent rumors of the GoPro Hero3.  Again, we have no word on specs at the moment, but it will surely have powerful WiFi features built-in to take advantage of the new GoPro app for smartphone compatibility (which already works with the Hero2).

Likewise, we would expect some resolution and frame rate improvements to (at least) match what Sony has done with its new Action Cams.

Stay tuned for the big news tonight!

UPDATED: Details on the GoPro HERO3 are here.

LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt w/ SSD Hits 635MB/s

October 11, 2012 By Eric Reagan

LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt SSD

LaCie has announced the latest model to join its Little Big Disk Thunderbolt Series. Built for video professionals, the LaCie Little Big Disk now includes SATA III SSDs that boast speeds up to 635MB/s read speeds – a 33 percent increase from the previous model. For comparison, I got 231MB/s read speeds out of the WD Thunderbolt Duo drive (still very fast).

The Little Big Disk 1TB SSD dips below $1.00 per gigabyte (pretty solid for an external SSD drive) and includes a Thunderbolt cable. [Read more…]

Vanguard BBH-200 Ball Head Review

October 10, 2012 By Kortney Jarman

Vanguard BBH-200 ball head for tripods

The Vanguard BBH-200 is an easy to use ball head for any tripod. The open body design hides it’s deceptive strength. With a max load of 44 lbs (20 kg), this head will support pretty much any configuration you need.  I put the BBH-200 through it’s paces with a Canon 7D with a battery grip and a 70-200mm f4 IS. GoPro Hero 3 Coming Soon…

October 8, 2012 By Eric Reagan

With everybody else dropping new action cams (e.g., Sony, Contour, Polaroid, etc.), it’s high time GoPro brought something new to the market with features like smartphone connectivity and 120fps at 720p as found in the new Sony HDR-AS15.

Photo Rumors notes that a new GoPro Hero 3 is expected by year’s end (as a replacement for the Hero 2) and will be a slimmer model with the expected built-in WiFi.  The new Sony action cams are looking very solid thus far, so GoPro has some serious competition to step up to now…
