Sony RX1 Hands-On

While “hands-on” might be a bit of a stretch for this article, I wanted to pass along my thoughts from actually putting my hands on the Sony RX1 at PhotoPlus 2012 today – even though the camera didn’t have a battery in it because Sony didn’t want to show off the camera without final firmware.

That said, the RX1 is unbelievably small.  As I held it, I just kept thinking about how incredibly compact they managed to put together a full frame camera.  With cameras like the RX1 (and even other models like NEX or Canon’s new EOS M), there is no longer a need to sacrifice image quality for camera size. Sony’s New Super 35mm Camera Shoots 4K and High Frame Rate

Sony dropped another tease today via its Super 35mm Facebook page, dropping a couple of key specs, along with the above image.

Do you like what you’re hearing so far?

Depending on the price point, this would be a direct competitor to cameras like the RED Epic and Scarlet.  It’s certainly situated above the current Sony F3 model. We’ll know more next week, as we’re just outside of a week from the official unveiling…

New Sony “F” Cinema Camera Coming October 30

Based on this teaser image posted in Sony’s Super 35mm Facebook page, it appears that Sony will be dropping a new F-class Super 35mm cinema camera in October.  All reasonable speculation points to a Sony F5 situated above the current 1080p-equipped F3.

Given that Sony’s lower-end NEX lineup features a high-frame rate, 4K camera (the NEX-FS700), it is likely that the Sony F5 would also get the 4K resolution and possibly a high frame rate option as well.  If that feature set were to hit, it would be expected to be in the $20k price range and would likely compete with the RED Scarlet and Epic market.

Next Sony Full Frame DSLR to Feature 50MP Sensor?

Wow. Things are starting to get out of hand now, aren’t they?

Four years ago, I thought the 21MP on the 5D Mark II was more than enough . . . if not a bit too much.  I’ve become accustomed to that over the last few years and it seemed like we hit a sweet spot in the resolution department among DSLRs. Then, Nikon came along with the 36MP behemoth Nikon D800, which stepped up the game (using a Sony sensor, of course).

Now, word comes from SonyAlphaRumors that the next high-end Sony camera may feature a 50MP sensor and reside above the Alpha A99 in Sony’s DSLR lineup.  According to tips, Sony is working on two potential options with one to be released as early as Spring 2013.

What do you think about a DSLR with a 50MP full frame sensor?  Is that too much?  Or is that the kind of resolution you are after?
