4K is the big buzz phrase this year. Camera-wise though, the selection is still a bit slim. Sony showed off its new FDR-AX100 and Panasonic featured a prototype 4K Lumix camera. Additionally, JVC had its 4K version of the PX100 on display as a reference exhibit at CES 2014. The camera was tethered to a 4K display and streaming 4K footage from its HDMI port.
Panasonic Shows Prototype High-Speed SDXC Card for Use with 4K Lumix Camera
In yesterday’s post about the Panasonic 4K Lumix camera, I noted that the camera had a SDXC card slot, which suggested highly compressed 4K footage. Panasonic has the oft-rumored 4K mirrorless camera on display at CES 2014. No details are known about the camera, which should be a notch or two above the current Panasonic GH3; however, it is expected to launch at NAB 2014 in April. [Read more…]
Canon Launches $40,000 4K Reference Display
Canon has launched the DP-V3010 4K reference display for digital cinema color grading and 4K post production and effects monitoring. The DP-V3010 is a 10-bit IPS display with a 4096 x 2560 and 16:10 aspect ratio. Obviously, this is a high-end display (at $40,000 retail) and is made for larger productions.

Canon EOS 1 Series Rumors for Q2 2014
A month or so back we heard a few rumors of a new Canon 1 Series camera with a high MP count that would be launched in 2014. I’ve heard two different resolutions for cameras in testing – 75MP+ and 44.7MP – both are full frame sensors. Sony FDR-AX1 4K Camcorder Now In Stock for $4498
Sony’s new FDR-AX1 4K camcorder is now in stock for the first time. B&H has it for $4498 with free shipping. The Sony FDR-AX1 captures 3840 x 2160 4K video with the XAVC S codec. It captures 4K video at 150Mbps and 1080p video at 50Mbps. Check it out here at B&H Photo.
GoPro Hero 3+ Unveiled
GoPro has announced a refresh to its Hero 3 camera with the Hero 3+.
It is a mild upgrade to the Hero 3; however, the updates address some of the key criticisms of the Hero 3. The Hero 3+ features 30% more battery life thanks to a 1180mAh battery (up from a 1050 mAh battery in the Hero 3). Additionally, the Hero 3+ gets a sharper f/2.8 lens, 4x faster built-in WiFi. Canon 44.7MP Pro DSLR Updates
There are a couple of Canon DSLR rumors for a high-MP DSLR. One is a 75MP+ DSLR and one is a 44.7MP DSLR. Canon’s current flagship DSLR, the EOS 1D X, rings in at 18.1MP. Previous rumors suggest that both DSLRs are undergoing field testing as prototype models. [Read more…]
