The latest rumors for the Canon 7D Mark II suggest a 24MP sensor. There’s no mention of sensor size though – with past rumors suggesting that a Canon 70D would fill the top APS-C spot in Canon’s lineup, while the 7D Mark II would become a low-end full frame camera.
The recent release of the Canon 7D firmware upgrade seems a bit at odds with such a release this fall; however, the original 7D is now 3 years old, which puts it in the range for a hardware update based on Canon’s history. [Read more…]

The lastest rumors of Canon’s lower-priced full frame DSLR suggests a Canon EOS 6D badge and an October unveiling date. Additional rumors emphasize that the focus is on making the full frame camera not only more affordable but also a smaller overall package.
Previous rumors suggested this camera would essentially work out to be a full frame version of the Canon 7D with a 22MP CMOS sensor and a sub-$2000 price point.
All of these rumors appear to be leading up to yet another massive throwdown between Canon’s budget full frame shooter and the Nikon D600. Expect more coverage on the Canon 6D (or whatever it ends up being named) as we creep up on Photokina 2012 and PhotoPlus 2012.

Northlight Images has received some new information concerning a cheaper full frame Canon DSLR. Rumors suggest either an 18MP sensor or a 22MP sensor, which leads to further speculation of a repurposed Canon 1D X or Canon 5D Mark III sensor, respectively.
Additional specs make the new model look a lot more like a full frame iteration of the Canon 7D, as opposed to the 5D Mark III. A smaller overall body design with a built-in flash would make it more of a prosumer design.
Other rumored features are as follows: [Read more…]

The Canon 7D will be getting a new firmware upgrade soon according to news posted on the CPN website and nabbed by Canon Rumors before it was removed.
There are lots of improvements on the still image capture side, including bumping the max RAW burst to 26 images (up from 15 consecutive images). That’s a pretty big bump in write speed, so I’m curious to know what Canon’s doing with the 7D since it received an upgrade for UDMA Mode 7 CF card support last year.
One biggie for all the HDSLR shooters out there is the addition of manual audio level controls. It seems a little late in the 7D’s game to add this and all the other goodies to the camera, given that it is almost 3 years old (it was announced on September 1, 2009). So maybe Canon is pushing for a final surge in 7D sales before the camera is replaced, or maybe Canon is looking to extend the life of the camera well beyond the typical 3-year mark for pro-level cameras?

The Varavon Armor Mini Rig and ProFinder are available for HDSLRs like the 5D Mark II and 7D.
The Armor Mini Rig is a slightly different take on some of the traditional HDSLR cages out there. I’ve been using an Armor Mini Rig that Varavon sent me to check out with my 5D Mark II for a couple of months now. In short, it’s a nice, affordable cage that can be a solid foundation for a decent rig. [Read more…]

While the above test from Digital Rev is not quite the serious endeavor, I’m still quite amazed at the abuse the Canon 7D took and the functionality it retained after the fact.
