Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS II USM Lens Patent

Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS II USM Lens Patent Diagram
In a recently published patent application, Canon details a new 35mm f/2 lens. You can see the optical formula in the above diagram.
The lens construction is 104.5mm long, so it is quite a bit longer than the current model at 62.6mm. The patent also covers a revised image stabilizing system to the current EF 35mm f/2 IS USM.
It was filed on March 31, 2015. You can read it for yourself below. As always, let me know if anything else jumps out. [Read more…]

Canon Develops 250MP APS-H CMOS Sensor
Canon has announced the development of a 250MP APS-H format CMOS sensor and has a working prototype camera using the super high resolution sensor.
The APS-H format was used in prior Canon 1D models and measures 29.2 x 20.2mm. The sensor resolution is 19,580 x 12,600 pixels. That is 125x greater resolution that 1080p HD video and 30x more resolution than 4K video.
The new CMOS sensor has mind-blowing readout speed of 1.25 billion pixels per second!
While we may scoff today at 250MP, it was only a eight years ago that Canon’s announcement of an in-development 50MP sensor seemed unrealistic. And today, of course, we have the Canon 5Ds.
More details in the press release below. [Read more…]

New Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 & 35mm f/1.4 Lenses Revealed in Patent

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 Patent Diagram
A recently published patent application from Canon reveals the development of new 50mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.4 lenses, which use similar optical formulas. We know the new EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM lens is due any day now but a 50mm f/1.4 lens hasn’t really been on the radar even though the current EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens is getting quite old. [Read more…]
New Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM Leaks Out Ahead of Official Launch
The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM has been expected for a few weeks now after a reference to the lens leaked out through a Russian certification agency. An image of the lens has now surfaced at Digicame-info, which usually means a product is only days (or maybe hours) away from an official announcement. This new lens will serve as a replacement to the current EF 35mm f/1.4L USM lens.
Leaked specs note that the lens features 14 elements in 11 groups with a nine blade circular aperture and a minimum focusing distance of 0.28m. It takes a 72mm filter and measures 105.5mm long with a 80.4mm diameter. Weight is 760g and it will use the Canon EW-77B lens hood.
Expect the official announcement to come along very shortly. Given the $1479 retail price of the current model, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the new model priced close to (or a little over) the $2k mark.
Also, we may get the Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens that was leaked earlier alongside the new 35mm lens. Stay tuned.
