The Canon 70D is a new 20.2MP APS-C camera featuring the DIGIC 5+ processor and a newly developed Dual Pixel CMOS AF system for fast focusing during video and live view. According to Canon, the new AF system allows the 70D to capture video with AF accuracy and speed close to that of a camcorder. [Read more…]

Canon 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Dropped to $1,299… Is it still too much?
The Canon 24-70mm f/4L IS USM appears to have received another $100 price drop. It was originally selling for $1,499 until it received a $100 price drop earlier this month. Now, it is showing up for $1,299 here at B&H Photo.
I suspect that Canon has had a hard time moving these at $1,500 a pop when the long-time favorite EF 24-105mm f/4L IS zoom is available for $1,149 retail and they’re always available refurbished for under $1000. In fact, right now, the Canon Store has a sale on refurb 24-105mm units at under $800. [Read more…]

Canon 70D Leaks Out; Features 20MP, 7fps and New Dual Pixel AF System
The Canon 70D has made its first unofficially official appearance in the form of a leaked advertisement acquired by Canon Rumors. The camera will feature a new 20.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and a DIGIC 5+ processor.
Additionally, built-in WiFi will likely work the same as recent iterations in the Canon 6D (i.e., easy and usable). Notably, the 70D will feature a new Dual Pixel CMOS AF system, which should be 5x faster than previous-generation live view and movie mode AF. That’ll be a huge win for Canon if true, since Canon’s DSLRs have, to date, sucked in the live view AF department. [Read more…]
Canon EOS M Firmware Update Version 2.0.2
Canon has released new firmware for the EOS M. Firmware version 2.0.2 is supposed to address the AF speed issues that are so detrimental to the enjoyment of an otherwise good camera (read my EOS M Review). Additionally, it adds support for the new EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens.
Specifically, firmware version 2.0.2 adresses the following issues: [Read more…]
Canon EOS M Firmware Upgrade Might Just Make it an Awesome Camera
The Canon EOS M had all the potential in the world to be a market leader; however, Canon utterly failed in producing a competent AF system. Accordingly, the EOS M has been highly criticized for its sluggish performance and sales appear to have been equally sluggish.
While Canon has blamed the poor lens selection for the EOS M’s failure to fly off store shelves, the rest of the photographic community knows that it’s the slow AF system that keeps people from buying in. I love the EF-M 22mm f/2 lens that Canon includes as a kit lens for the EOS M – it’s compact, a great focal length as a walkaround lens and it has a nice, fast aperture. But, again, the AF speed is unacceptable.
When Canon announced the EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens earlier this month, the company also revealed that a firmware update would be forthcoming for the EOS M and will improve the system’s AF performance. Now, it appears we have video proof of just what firmware version 2.0.2 for the EOS M will do. [Read more…]
