Rode Videomic Pro Compared to Original Videomic

January 28, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Carl from Digital SLR Shooter put together the above comparison video between the new Rode Videomic Pro and the original Rode Videomic.  I’m pretty impressed with the difference the +20db gain setting makes on noise for the new mic.  Thanks for sharing your test Carl. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to try one out for myself soon.

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SD Card in the Nikon D7000

January 27, 2011 By Eric Reagan

The Nikon D7000 is the first DSLR to take advantage of the new UHS-I SD card specification.  Unfortunately though, it doesn’t appear to take full advantage of that speed potential.  The Nikon D7000’s buffer seems to cap at 10 frames during continuous high speed shooting no matter which SD card is inserted.

I got my hands on the latest SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SDHC cards, which are due out in March, to see just how well they worked in this first-generation UHS-I camera.

While the difference between the SanDisk Extreme and Extreme Pro SD cards is marginal in the D7000, there is still an obvious difference.  After capturing the full complement of 10 frames at the D7000’s max frame rate of 6fps, the D7000 delivered the following results with each of the cards. Nikon D7000 Confirmed to Use Sony Sensor

January 26, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Tech analysis website, Chipworks, has confirmed that the Nikon D7000 features a 16.2MP Sony sensor. This is almost certainly the same APS-C sensor found in the Sony A55 and A580 cameras.

Speedliter’s Handbook Now Shipping

December 28, 2010 By Eric Reagan

I just got a tip that the Syl Arena’s Speedliter’s Handbook is now shipping from Amazon.

If you aren’t familiar with it, this book is all about learning to shoot with Canon’s E-TTL flash system.  In Syl’s words, “It’s almost 400 pages, includes 800 photos, 100 diagrams, and 39 shoots detailed on 2-page spreads. If you shoot small flash (any brand), then 70% will be of interest. If you shoot Canon Speedlites, then 110% of the book will be of interest.”

The Speedliter’s Handbook retails for $49.99, but it’s currently up for grabs on Amazon for $31.49.
