Sony RX1 Hands-On

October 25, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Sony RX1

While “hands-on” might be a bit of a stretch for this article, I wanted to pass along my thoughts from actually putting my hands on the Sony RX1 at PhotoPlus 2012 today – even though the camera didn’t have a battery in it because Sony didn’t want to show off the camera without final firmware.

That said, the RX1 is unbelievably small.  As I held it, I just kept thinking about how incredibly compact they managed to put together a full frame camera.  With cameras like the RX1 (and even other models like NEX or Canon’s new EOS M), there is no longer a need to sacrifice image quality for camera size. Pentax Full Frame Camera Coming, But Not Anytime Soon

October 11, 2012 By Eric Reagan

A recent interview with Pentax Japan’s development chief confirms that Pentax is working on a full frame camera; however, it won’t be hitting shelves until 2014 at the earliest.

The relevant, translated quote from the interview is:

We are working on it [the FF camera] as a product proposal, so it will, without doubt, be released.we are developing with an eye to a post-2013 release

While it is encouraging to hear Pentax has plans to make a full frame DSLR a reality, another 2-year wait is still a tough pill to swallow for the Pentax-faithful who have been waiting patiently thus far.

Are you a Pentax shooter?

Leica M-E Unveiled as Lower Priced Rangefinder

September 18, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Leica M-E

While the new Leica M cruises in at $7k for its full frame 24MP and 1080p video shooting, the Leica M-E isn’t quite the bargain basement price at $5450.  But still, it’s a step down with an 18MP CCD sensor that is close to the same camera as the prior generation Leica M9.

The Leica M-E features a sensitivity range of ISO 160-2500, a 0.68x magnification viewfinder and a 230k-dot res 2.5″ LCD.  The Leica M-E should be available packaged with Lightroom 4 later this month from Leica retailers.  Check availability here at B&H Photo.

More details in the press release below. [Read more…]

Leica M is a Full Frame 24MP, $7K Rangefinder

September 18, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Leica M

The Leica M is heir apparent to the Leica M9.  From this point forward, Leica is ditching the number system and simply calling new models the Leica M.

The Leica M features a 24MP full frame sensor and captures 1080/24p video.  The M offers a 3-inch, 920k-dot res LCD with Corning Gorilla Glass to add to the robust build.  In addition to video capture, this is the first M-model to sport live view on the LCD, as well as focus peaking.

The Leica M should be available in early 2013 for $6950.  Check availability here at B&H Photo.

More details in the press release below. [Read more…]

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 Full Frame Compact Camera Announced – and It Is Gorgeous!

September 12, 2012 By Eric Reagan

 Sony RX1

The Sony Cyber-shot RX1 is a new full frame compact camera, which sounds like a bit of an oxymoron.  Somehow, Sony managed to stuff a full frame image sensor inside a compact body and bolt a 35mm f/2 Zeiss lens on the front with a 9-blade aperture for circular bokeh.

And, you know what?

It looks amazing. [Read more…]

Nikon D600 Specs and Image Leak

September 11, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D600

More details on the upcoming Nikon D600 have leaked out further confirming the 24.3MP FX format DSLR with 1080/24p HD video capture.  The specs indicate that it will carry several limitations as a low-end full frame camera.  Notably, the D600 is limited by a max shutter speed of 1/4000s, 1/200s sync-speed and a sensitivity range of ISO 100-6400.  (The D7000 reaches up to 1/8000s shutter speed, while the D3200 and D5100 also max out at 1/4000s.)

The D600 will also be compatible with the new WU-1b wireless mobile adapter for connecting it with iOS and Android smartphones and tablets – just like the WU-1a for the Nikon D3200.
