Canon Video Contest Film Lands at Sundance

Canon’s video contest, “The Story Beyond the Still,” which has been cooking along for a year now, will culminate in the debut of the short film created by contestants and Vincent Laforet at the Sundance Film Festival this Sunday.  The complete short film will be available on the Sundance Channel and Vimeo.com on Monday.

Switronix PowerBase70 for Canon Rebel T2i

Switronix has announced the PowerBase70 for the Canon Rebel T2i.  The PowerBase 70 is a battery pack that attaches to the base of the Rebel T2i and provides up to 6-times the run time over ordinary Rebel T2i batteries.

Sony CLM-V55 Official Details and Images Released

Sony just dropped the official details and product photos of the new 5-inch CLM-V55 monitor for Alpha DSLRs – or just about any other DSLR with an HDMI-out.

  • Clip-on attachment for Sony hot shoe or standard ISO hot/cold shoe
  • 5-inch WVGA LCD (800 x 480 resolution)
  • Tilt/swivel mount
  • Pixel magnification for 1:1 zoom of HD image

Canon 7D vs. ARRI Alexa: You Get What You Pay For…

In still image files shot with the Canon 7D and other DSLRs, we have the luxury of using RAW format to capture each frame and get a tremendous amount of latitude (exposure and color range in over/under-exposed shots) out of those files in post production.  Unfortunately, when it comes to video capture, DSLRs like the Canon 7D spit out a highly compressed file that has nowhere near the amount of latitude you get from a RAW still image file.

While the below video comparison may seem silly in some respects for comparing a $1500 camera to a $65,000+ (depending on the configuration) camera, it is also very useful to those new to HDSLR video – as a way to demonstrate (1) just how limited these cameras are when it comes to capturing video, and (2) just how much more important a perfect exposure is when recording video. DualEyes for Mac OS X Now Available as Free Beta

DualEyes, one of Singular Software’s magical audio-syncing programs, is now available for Mac in beta form.  Best of all . . . it’s free.

If you’ve never tried PluralEyes or DualEyes before and you shoot video and audio on a dual system with your HDSLR, then you really ought to give it a try.  To get an idea of what you’re missing, check out my prior review of PluralEyes for Final Cut Pro.
