Do You Need a Rangefinder for Street Photography?

September 19, 2009 By Chris Gampat

Waiting

Since the arrival of the Leica M9, bloggers have been abound with posts about Leicas, street photography, and why you need a rangefinder right now. Further, Chris Weeks has made a documentary on street photography and the human condition. If you watch it, you’ll see that it’s very pro-rangefinder. A personal critique of mine is that it almost seems like what we call in the industry to be an “advertorial.” To clarify, this is an article or piece of media that is supposed to be presented in a journalistic fashion but can seem more like subliminal marketing. To be fair, Mr. Weeks probably does legitimately love Leicas for street photography. However, as a photographer that has shot with all brands of cameras, I see no reason why a DSLR can’t do the same job. Regular readers of this blog may know that street photography is some that is held dear to me. More on this after the jump.

Author’s Note: This is not an anti-Leica post, when I worked for Magnum Photos many of their photographers used Leicas. I hold them in high regard and respect their history, but this post is about you as a photographer.

The Leica announcement of new products that has been rumored around the net will be done in the form of a webcast. This is something that isn’t done often by camera companies but from the intro video, we can probably expect to see some exciting things.

Olympus: There is Lots More to Come to M4/3rds

June 26, 2009 By Chris Gampat

Olympus E-P1

The Olympus EP-1 has received tremendous amounts of press since its release as the camera is truly the digital rangefinder that many people have been looking for. However, according to the British Journal of Photography via Photo Rumors there is both a pro Pen camera  and a lower grade Pen camera in development.

Olympus's Micro 4/3rd's camera

I shot the above photo at last year’s PhotoPlus Expo. It was the prototype of the EP-1, or at least it was supposed to be. Olympus said that it was the prototype of their Micro 4/3rds camera. However, they never said which one it was a prototype for. Could it possibly be the one that will be aimed more towards consumers? [Read more…]

Leica S2

September 22, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Leica has dropped quite the shocker on everyone with their new Leica S2, which is a relatively compact DSLR with a monstrous 37.5-megapixel sensor.  The shocking part is that the sensor size is 56% larger than a 35mm (or full frame) sensor found in “pro” level DSLRs.  Kind of makes Canon’s 21.1 megapixel 1Ds Mark III look kind of quaint, eh?  Leica has announced a number of lenses to accompany the new system as well. The Digital M – LEICA M8

April 2, 2007 By Eric Reagan

The Digital M – [LEICA M8 Silver]

Originally uploaded by takuhitosotome.

Shutterbug tested the new 10-megapixel Leica M8 in the April issue of the mag.

While no digital camera can expect to be pre-eminent for decades at a time like the 35mm M Leicas, and the M8 will inevitably be surpassed in five years by the Leica M9 with more megapixels and even better image quality, the Leica M8 is about as good as it can be given the current state of digital imaging technology.

Head on over to get all the goods on this long-awaited and pricey digital rangefinder.
