Apple has updated Aperture 3 to version 3.1.2, which “addresses overall stability and performance issues,” as well as fixing issues with importing iPhoto libraries, improving responsiveness with brushes and reconnecting referenced master images.

Nikon has updated ViewNX 2 to version 2.1.2. The new version includes a number of updates for Windows users. You can get full details and download instructions on Nikon’s website.
Bokeh 2 is a plug-in from Alien Skin that allows you to create all kinds of focus effects and vignettes. As with other plug-ins from Alien Skin, Bokeh 2 is now updated to deliver full 64-bit support with Photoshop CS5 (it also works with Lightroom 3). And, it is quite peppy even with my aging Windows Vista machine.
Software products often tend to get pushed back in the review cycle in favor of camera reviews here on Photography Bay, which is a bit of a shame for the cool stuff like Bokeh 2. When I got around to actually putting Bokeh 2 to use, I was really amazed at the power that it gives you to take your images so far beyond what is practical when using Photoshop or Lightroom alone. DxO Labs has announced the availability of DxO Optics Pro v6.5.5, which adds RAW image processing support for the Sony A33 and Nikon P7000. Additionally, the new version adds 50 new optics modules for a number of other camera models. This update pushes DxO Optics Pro past the 3,000 mark in total correction modules – and a total of more than 5,000 is planned by the end of the year.

GIMP 2.6 for Photographers is a new book from Klaus Goelker that guides beginning GIMP users through the open-source image editing software. GIMP 2.6 is free, open-source software compatible with Windows, OS X and Linux.
GIMP is considered a rather powerful alternative to Photoshop; however, educational info on GIMP has sometimes been difficult to find. This book “has evolved from classroom materials that the author developed and taught in courses and workshops on image editing with the GIMP.” Conveniently, the book includes a software DVD that contains a full version of GIMP and other open-source photo programs for those with slower Internet connections.
GIMP 2.6 for Photographers carries a retail price of $39.95; however, it is currently available for $26.37 on Amazon.com.
