Faux Slider Shots with just a Tripod
Here’s a great little trick for getting some motion in your video shots even if you don’t have a slider or a jib. I’ve used a tripod tilted up on two legs quite a bit for cheating dolly-in and dolly-out shots, but the Fenchel & Janisch folks take it a step further with movements along other axes for some cool jib-esque shots. The suggestion of shooting a higher frame rate to smooth out any imperfections in the camera movement when conformed to a lower frame rate is good as well.

New Vanguard ABEO Plus Tripods
One of the new products that Vanguard unveiled at Photokina 2012 was its new ABEO Plus tripod line.
The ABEO Plus models are available with sturdy legs that are either diamond-woven carbon fiber or heavy-gauge aluminum. These feature a large lever lock that allows you to quickly adjust the height of the center column, as well as tension adjustable flip-lock legs that let you adjust the tension to counter ordinary wear that occurs over long periods of time.
The ABEO Plus also feature the same 3-in-1 feet found on the excellent Vanguard Auctus Plus tripods. Additionally, the ABEO Plus tripods feature legs that individually adjust to 25, 50, and 80-degree angles with an ergonomic release button, as well as a low-angle adaptor for macro photography.
The aluminum and carbon fiber models range in price from $219.99 to $479.99. Check availability at B&H Photo.

Vanguard GH-200 Hands-On
On my last day at CES 2012, I stopped by the Vanguard booth to check out some of their new products. I’ve been a Vanguard fan since I bought the SBH-250 ball head a couple of years or so back.
One of the new items from Vanguard this year is an updated version of their pistol-grip ball head. The GH-100 was last year’s model, which I’ve used and enjoyed quite a bit – although I have neglected to publish a review on it. The GH-200 is the new model and it improves on the few minor complaints I had about the otherwise solid GH-100. In essence, you can take this as a review of both units with some notes on what makes the GH-200 an improved offering. [Read more…]
