June 27, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Canon-EOS-M-Black

Canon has released new firmware for the EOS M. Firmware version 2.0.2 is supposed to address the AF speed issues that are so detrimental to the enjoyment of an otherwise good camera (read my EOS M Review). Additionally, it adds support for the new EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens.

Specifically, firmware version 2.0.2 adresses the following issues: [Read more…]

Sony Cyber-shot RX100 II Officially Announced

June 27, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Sony RX100 II

Alongside the full frame RX1R, Sony has announced the Cyber-shot RX100 II, which is the refreshed follow-up to the popular RX100. Sony claims that the new 1″ sensor in the RX100 II is roughly 40% more sensitive in dimly lit situations than the original RX100 (and the RX100 was no joke either). [Read more…]

The Sony RX1R is a new full frame compact camera with a 24.3MP sensor and a fixed Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 lens. Unlike the Sony RX1, the RX1R has no optical low-pass filter in order to take full advantage of high resolution full frame sensor for fine detail.  [Read more…]

Sony RX1R and RX100M2 Leak Out

June 26, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Sony RX1R

Sony’s new full frame RX1R and advanced compact camera, the RX100M2, have leaked out ahead of their official release dates. The RX1R will feature a full frame 24MP sensor without an anti-aliasing filter.

Sony RX-100M2

As you can see, the new RX100M2 adds a hot shoe to the camera, which was something that was missed on the excellent RX100. It also adds a tilting LCD screen, as opposed to the fixed LCD on the RX100. Otherwise, the RX100M2 sports the same 1-inch 20MP sensor and 28-100mm equivalent zoom lens.

In addition to these images, the specs also leaked out. Check them out below. [Read more…]

Best Lenses for Nikon D600

June 26, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D600

DxO Labs has rated the best lenses for the Nikon D600 according to their overall scores based on tests in DxOMark. 72 different lenses were tested with the highest score going to the Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.4G and the AF-S 85mm f/1.8G lenses both getting a DxOMark score of 40.

It’s interesting to see the dropoff in scores from prime to zoom lenses. The highest rated zoom lens was the Nikon AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8G ED with a DxOMark score of 28.

Below are the top 10 primes, followed by the top 10 zoom lenses. [Read more…]

Google Reader Dies This Week. What You Can Do to Keep Your Feed Coming…

June 26, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Google Reader

For those of you who access Photography Bay via Google Reader, things are going to change on June 30, which is when Google is officially killing off Google Reader.

I’ve used Google Reader for years and was very sad to hear this news. However, there are some other options out there.

One of the best is Feedly, which is what I switched to. You can migrate your Google Reader account directly to Feedly with little more than a login. Feedly keeps your organization pretty close to the same and works much like Google Reader.

If you’re tired of dealing with RSS feeds, you can keep up with the latest stuff on our Facebook or Twitter accounts. Additionally, you can subscribe via email to have posts delivered directly to your email.

If you have another RSS reader that you prefer to use over Google, you can get Photography Bay’s feed URL here.

Use Blending Modes in Photoshop Elements to Make Colors Pop

June 25, 2013 By Eric Reagan

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScRkt3kKNdU&w=640&h=360]

Watch this short, 60-second video to learn how to use a simple blend mode edit in Photoshop Elements to make colors pop on a washed out photo.

For a sub-$100 program, Photoshop Elements 11 has more editing power than many amateurs will ever use. If you are put off by the thought of “renting” the full version of Photoshop through Adobe’s recent Creative Cloud move, consider if Elements is enough for you at this minimal expense for a perpetual license.
