How Does Third-Party Firmware Affect Canon, Nikon and Panasonic Camera Warranties?
We’ve covered Magic Lantern firmware and the new Canon 5D Mark III raw video feature lately. However, one thing we haven’t touched on is how using and installing third-party firmware on your DSLR affects your camera warranty.
Udi over at DIY Photography contacted Canon, Nikon and Panasonic to see what they had to say about using third-party firmware on their cameras. In short, Canon says that using Magic Lantern firmware won’t void your warranty, while both Nikon and Panasonic say that installing a third-party firmware will void your warranty.
Of course, if your Canon camera is bricked by the Magic Lantern firmware, Canon would charge for the repairs.
More over at DIY Photography.

Storm Chasers Capture Video of First 10 Minutes of the Moore EF5 Tornado
Storm chasers Justin Cox and Chance Coldiron were just a few hundred yards away when the massive tornado that eventually struck Moore, Oklahoma first touched down. They captured the first 10 minutes of the tornado as it grew to a massive size and watched it cross the interstate just in front of them.
They appeared to be directly in touch with the local radio station in an effort to warn Moore residents of the tornado’s projected path and vicious intensity.
Major kudos to Justin and Chance for sticking in there to capture such amazing footage while keeping residents in the loop.

Leica has its upcoming ‘Mini M’ camera listed on its website now. The ‘Mini M’ name appears to be where it fits in the lineup among Leica cameras, rather than the official model name.
No other information is known about the Mini M at this point; however, the logical conclusion would be that the Leica Mini M would be a rangerfinder-style, interchangeable lens, APS-C camera as a nice fit between the full frame Leica M and the fixed lens, APS-C Leica X2. Leica offers a newsletter signup on its website for future Mini M news.
Guy Sticks a Smartphone Outside a Storm Shelter, Gets Up Close Footage of Moore, Oklahoma Tornado
Charles Gafford took cover in his storm shelter as the massive tornado passed through Moore, Oklahoma. As the tornado approached his neighborhood, he stuck his smartphone outside of the shelter and captured some pretty stunning, close-range footage.
Before the first person complains, yes, he shot it vertically. And, yes, that’s normally frowned upon. However, I think we can all give Charles a free pass since he had the most powerful tornado on record coming right at him.
Below is a video of what Charles’ neighborhood looked like after the tornado passed and he emerged from his storm shelter. [Read more…]
