Nikon D7100 Coming This Week?

February 18, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D7100 Rumors

Nikon has press conferences scheduled this week, which likely means some new camera announcements and the most likely camera being tossed around right now is a replacement for the Nikon D7000. Rumored specs on the new camera include a 24MP sensor, ISO 100-6400 and a form factor similar to its full frame brother – the D600.

Other rumors point to the possibility of a advanced Nikon Coolpix point and shoot camera – perhaps a Nikon P310 replacement that supports RAW image capture and WU-1a support for wireless image transfer. Or, a point and shoot with a 1″ sensor that would presumably compete head-to-head with the Sony RX100.

Whatever is coming, we should have official word and complete details in the next couple of days. Stay tuned.

Iran’s Epic Photoshop Fail

February 14, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Iran Photoshop Fail

Iran recently made the news with the unveiling of its stealth jet, the Qaher-313, which may or may not even be able to fly. After some heavy criticism to that point, however, Iran released a photo of the Qaher-313 in flight high above the country’s own Mount Damavand.

Unfortunately for Iran, the rest of the world still hasn’t bought in to the Qaher-313’s ability to actually fly – since the nice photo of Mount Damavand had the below hanger shot (from the Qaher-313’s unveiling) Photoshopped into it.

The motion blur added to the jet is a nice touch – don’t you think? [Read more…]

RED Sues Sony Over F65, F55 and F5 Cine Cameras; Seeks to Stop Sales and Have Them (Literally) Destroyed

February 13, 2013 By Eric Reagan

RED v Sony

Here’s some damages you don’t see in your everyday lawsuit… RED is asking a court to have existing Sony cameras destroyed.

RED brought the lawsuit today in federal court against Sony due to the technology inside of Sony’s F65, F55 and F5 cinema cameras – claiming that it infringes on two of RED’s patents. RED is asking the court to force Sony to stop making and selling the cameras and that Sony should surrender all profits derived from the previous sale of the cameras.

Additionally, RED asks the court to force Sony “to deliver up and destroy all infringing cameras.” Ouch. [Read more…]

Canon EOS C50 Coming to the Low End of Cinema Line?

February 13, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Canon Cinema Camera

After yesterday’s rumor of a new Canon EOS Cinema camera to be unveiled around NAB 2013, new rumors surfaced of an “entry-level” cinema camera (perhaps a Canon EOS C50) that would be situated below the Canon C100.

While Canon’s cinema cameras are certainly popular, they are still well out of the reach of many amateurs and low-end pros who are shooting video with Canon DSLRs such as the Rebel T4i and Canon 60D. At $6500, the C100 is still quite a bit of a reach for many of these shooters.

Would a $3000 Canon C50 push these enthusiasts and low-end pros to step up to a dedicated cinema camera? Would you pay $3000 or more for such a camera? If a C50 is in the works, what kind of specs could it bring to the table and not cannibalize the C100?

Voice-Driven Photo Editing from Adobe

February 13, 2013 By Eric Reagan

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2KeluYrHJk&w=640&h=360]

Check out the above video for a sneak peak on some of the work being done by Adobe Research and the University of Michigan. PixelTone is an experimental interface for image editing.

Photo editing can be a challenging task, and it becomes even more difficult on the small, portable screens of mobile devices that are now frequently used to capture and edit images. To address this problem we present PIXELTONE, a multimodal photo editing interface that combines speech and direct manipulation. We observe existing image editing practices and derive a set of principles that guide our design. In particular, we use natural language for expressing desired changes to an image, and sketching to localize these changes to specific regions.

You can read more on PixelTone in a 9-page research paper that documents the development of this multimodel interface.

Sony A58 20MP DSLR Coming Soon; NEX-3N at 16MP

February 13, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Sony NEX-3N

The rumored Sony A58 is expected to have a 20MP sensor when it arrives in the next couple of months to replace the current Sony A57, which has a 16MP ASP-C sensor. The Sony A57 retails for $700 for the body only and $800 with a kit lens. Expectations for the 20MP A58 would put it in the same neighborhood of price for the respective body and kit.

Additionally, the upcoming Sony NEX-3N is expected to feature the same 16MP sensor as found in the NEX-F3. The F3 retails for $600 with a kit lens (although it can be had for $500 right now thanks to instant rebates), so it would be expected to see the NEX-3N slide in at the same price point as it replaces the NEX-F3.

Other products expected to be unveiled from Sony sooner rather than later include a Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 at $1600+, a new 18-55mm II kit lens for Alpha cameras and a new 70-400mm G f/4.5-5.6 II in the $2500 price range.
