Fuji XF1 Hands-On

November 2, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Fuji XF1

The Fuji XF1 is the latest X-Series point and shoot camera.  It features a retro-style that’s as much of what defines the camera as technical features like the 12MP EXR CMOS sensor and f/1.8 lens.

The XF1 is certainly a pretty camera, and those specs put it near the top of point and shoot models around. The prints from the XF1 that I saw at PhotoPlus looked solid, which is promising for a camera as pretty as this one. [Read more…]

Canon 6D Hands-On

November 1, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon 6D

The Canon 6D is a 20MP full frame camera that steps up in performance from the 5D Mark II, but still offers a lower entry price than what the 5D Mark II did at its debut.   For now, Canon’s full frame line-up will consist of (in order of sophistication and price) the 5D Mark II, 6D and 5D Mark III.

The 6D should offer improved dynamic range and low-light noise control thanks to larger pixels and improved processing over the 5D Mark II.  Additionally, the 6D steps up to 4.5 fps frame rate over the 5D Mark II at 3.9 fps. Another kudos goes to the locking mode dial on the 6D – a small, but great, addition. [Read more…]

Sony RX100 Review

November 1, 2012 By Eric Reagan

The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 is a 20MP point and shoot camera.  But this isn’t just any point and shoot camera.  The RX100 sets itself apart from every other compact camera out there thanks to a much larger image sensor, which measures the same size as the Nikon 1 Series mirrorless camera system.  Somehow, Sony managed to cram that sensor into a pocketable digicam.

Read on to find out if that big sensor combined with the rest of the RX100 features is enough to make this camera the king of pocket cams. [Read more…]

Canon 1D X DxO Test Grades Are In – It’s the Best Canon Yet.

November 1, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon 1D X Comparison

Canon 1D X Comparison via DxO Labs

The Canon 1D X just got its DxO Mark scores published and it scored better than any Canon full frame sensor to date.  That said, it still failed to best the Nikon D4, let alone the Nikon D800.

Canon 1D X vs Nikon D800

Canon 1D X vs. Nikon D800

However, stepping away from the numbers, the Canon 1D X is a heckuva camera that can certainly hold its own in just about any shooting environment.

What do you think about the DxO score and comparisons for the Canon 1D X?  Would these test results sway your opinion of the camera?

Canon EF 24-70 f/4L IS Lens “On the Horizon”

October 31, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon 24-70mm f4 IS Rumors

After the rumor about a 24-70mm f/2.8L IS lens from Canon a couple days ago, Canon Rumors is now tweaking that rumor with “reliable” info on a f/4 version of that lens.  Apparently, the f/4 version of the lens is on the horizon and could be arriving soon.

Seems like an odd lens to add to the mix, particularly with the solid 24-105mm f/4L IS that’s been selling like hotcakes since its release.  Of course, if the sharpness improvements are as substantial as the 24-70mm f/2.8L II were over the lens it replaced, a smaller and lighter lens might serve as a replacement and more directly compliment the popular 70-200mm lineup.

What would you think about a stabilized 24-70mm f/4L IS lens?  What would be the right price point for you?
