Pentax 645D Gets $1200 Price Drop

September 4, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Pentax 645D

The 40MP medium format Pentax 645D recently got a price drop from $9,995 to $8,795, which puts it even closer to the high-end 35mm DSLR range (see, e.g., Canon 1D X at $6,800 and Nikon D4 at $6,000).

Some retailers have already updated their list pricing to reflect the price drop (Adorama), while others have not (B&H Photo).  Expect the pricing to go into effect at all Pentax retailers soon.

ioSafe Has In-Office Disaster for Unintended Product Testing

September 3, 2012 By Eric Reagan

ioSafe Offices Disaster

Around the same time I published the recent ioSafe Extreme Rugged hard drive review, ioSafe had its own in-office disaster when a sprinkler pipe broke and flooded its office.  Fortunately, they were using their own ioSafe waterproof drives throughout the offices and didn’t lose any data.

Check out their account of the rather ironic disaster below. [Read more…]

Sony NEX-EA50 Pricing Update: Only $3599 w/ 18-200mm Servo Lens

September 3, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Sony NEX-EA50

The Sony NEX-EA50 was initially believed to be priced at $4200 with an included 18-200mm servo zoom lens.  A pricing update from B&H, however, reveals that this kit will be only $3599.

Given the features available on this camcorder, I am quite impressed with the low price point.  The NEX-EA50 should be available in October.  You can order it here at B&H Photo.

SmugMug Delivers Price Hike, Users Set to Jump Off Bridge

September 3, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Late Friday night, SmugMug subscribers (including yours truly) got an email regarding a new pricing structure for Pro users.  The former account options have been changed from Basic, Power and Pro to now Basic, Power, Portfolio and Business.

Essentially, the Pro account is split into Portfolio and Business.  The key difference between the two new types of accounts is that the Business account allows you to set prices and make profits on prints purchased through your online account.

Previously, the Pro account, which allowed you to set prices and make profits on prints, was priced at $150 per year.  Now, the Portfolio account is priced at $150 per year.  The Business account is priced at $300 per year.  Existing Pro users can renew for $250 for next year. [Read more…]

Nikon D800 Sensor Confirmed as “Made by Sony”

September 3, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D800

It’s been no secret that Sony is a major supplier of sensors in past Nikon DSLRs.  With the past few generations of DSLRs, however, Nikon has been rather coy about the sourcing of the actual sensors within the cameras.  When asked, Nikon reps usually respond by saying the sensor is “designed by Nikon” and refuse to provide further details on who actually makes the sensor.
