Shooting Alex Honnold’s Free Climb Up the 1600′ Sentinel

October 2, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Alex Honnold

As I was flipping through the channels tonight, I landed on 60 Minutes’ feature on Alex Honnold, who free climbs up huge rock faces.  He does stuff without a rope that no other person can do – or at least is willing to do.

The story alone is compelling enough to hear; however, 60 Minutes did a bang up job of capturing it on video with a mix of 14 ENG, DSLRs and GoPro cameras.  They mounted GoPro cameras on the rock wall, on the film crew climbers on the wall and even on Alex’s chalk bag belt (until he decided to ditch it mid-climb). In-Camera Warnings and Suggestions: What Do Users Want?

October 2, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Nikon DSLR Patent

Many recent camera models feature “tips” or “suggestions” on shooting modes and camera operation.  Nikon filed a patent application in June 2011 that shows off more of these kind of helpful hints.

I don’t know that these new warnings and suggestions indicated in the patent offer much more than what we already see in the latest entry-level DSLRs.  However, it got me to thinking about what would be good ideas to implement in these tips or guide modes. [Read more…]

Bass Cam

Bass Cam

One of the great things about the Sony NEX-5N is the size and weight.  The bass player couldn’t have handled the bass with a heavier camera on the end. The NEX-5N was pushing it, but it was still workable for a few minutes as he played. [Read more…]

Flickr Releases Android App

September 29, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Flickr Android App

Flickr has released a new Android app, which is a free download from the Android Market Place.  The new app features a built-in camera, upload integration with Flickr, Facebook, Twitter and others, and geotagging.  It also offers access to Flickr organizational features and groups (although, I’m seeing limited options for any serious organizational features so far).

You can find it in the Android Market here.

Nikon Says It’s Sorry

September 29, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Nikon Facebook

Nikon has apologized for yesterday’s Facebook post, which claimed “A photographer is only as good as the equipment he uses.”

We know some of you took offense to the last post, and we apologize, as it was not our aim to insult any of our friends. Our statement was meant to be interpreted that the right equipment can help you capture amazing images. We appreciate the passion you have for photography and your gear, and know that a great picture is possible anytime and anywhere.

Kudos Nikon.
