RED HDRx Gets ‘The Impossible Shot’

March 19, 2011 By Eric Reagan

The above sample clip demonstrates the HDRx voodoo that RED is working in its new EPIC camera.  The shot from dimly lit tunnel to a sunny afternoon maintains the aperture and other exposure settings during the transition.  No one is pulling aperture via a remote during the transition.

Using the new HDRx feature in the EPIC, the camera makes the previously-impossible now possible.  The HDRx functionality works by recording two exposures and blending them together, which allows the camera to hold the highlight details in the clouds after emerging from the tunnel in the above video.  The exposures are captured simultaneously, with the underexposed frame recorded at a fraction of the shutter speed of the “normal” frame.  Not even film has this kind of latitude.

Sony NEX-7 Coming Soon?

March 17, 2011 By Eric Reagan

The rumor mill is churning about a new NEX flagship camera from Sony.  The rumored Sony NEX-7 was tipped to Photo Rumors as a follow up to the popular NEX-3 and NEX-5, along with the following description:

When you look in front of the new Sony NEX 7 with the 24mm Zeiss mounted, the new camera looks like a twin of the Minolta Dimage A2 – a really small nice pro body.

That description reminds me of the recently announced JVC GC-PX1, although it is a fixed lens camera.  Not much more about the new mirrorless camera is known at the moment.

Photoshop Express 2.0 for iOS

March 16, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Adobe has updated Photoshop Express for Apple iOS to version 2.0.  The update includes the ability to purchase an in-app camera pack that leverages powerful noise reduction based on the outstanding tech in Lightroom 3 and CS5.  Additionally, the $3.99 camera pack offers a self-timer shutter trigger and an auto-review option.

You can find Photoshop Express 2.0 in the Apple App Store – and it’s still free.  If you want the extra horsepower of the above features though, you’ll have to spring for the $3.99 Adobe Camera Pack as a purchase within the Photoshop Express App.

Ikan Elements Starter Fly Kit Review

March 15, 2011 By Eric Reagan

The Ikan Elements Starter Fly Kit is a compact and affordable (around $100) HDSLR rig.  While this kit is basic, it is surprisingly effective and will deliver enough performance for many HDSLR users who want to get some more stability out of their handheld work.

I love stuff that works and is cheap.  While stuff that works is a necessity and stuff that’s cheap is nice, put the two together and you get a real winner in my book. [Read more…]
