Nikon P6000 and Canon G10 Comparative Review at Luminous Landscape

October 29, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Luminous Landscape has published a comparative review of the Nikon P6000 and Canon G10.

The net of this comparison is that while the Nikon P6000 is a fine little camera, it finds itself in the unfortunate position of being released at the same time as the Canon G10, which it would appear is an attempt by Canon to produce a full-featured pocket camera with the highest quality that they are capable of.

Nikon Coolpix P6000 Review at Photo Review

October 28, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Photo Review has published a review of the Nikon P6000.

Test shots taken with the review camera were bright and ‘punchy’ with the elevated contrast and saturation that typifies many small-sensor digicams. Exposures were pitched to record shadow detail so many shots taken in bright sunlight had blown-out highlights.

Nikon Coolpix P80 Review at Neocamera

October 28, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Neocamera has posted a review of the Nikon Coolpix P80.

As long as ISO is kept low, this camera captures accurate colors and its automatic white-balance system is above average.

Nikon D90 Review at Camcorder Info

October 26, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Camcorder Info has published a review of the Nikon D90, with a focus directed toward the camera’s video capabilities.

Despite its problems, plenty of people will enjoy capturing video with the Nikon D90. Its 24 fps frame rate produces a slow, dreamy image that can be very attractive. Colors generally looked outstanding.

Canon 5D Mark II and Nikon D90: Accessorized for Video

October 24, 2008 By Eric Reagan

It was only a matter of time until some industrious company stepped in and filled this niche.  Redrock Micro “Redrock Micro designs and sells a line of high quality cinema accessories for independent filmmakers, film educators and students, and budget-conscious moviemakers” and has just upped the ante for the mainstay of DSLR accessory makers that have been resting on their fat laurels.

The above contraption is a video platform designed to the specs and functionalities of our two video-capable DSLRs, the Canon 5D Mark II and the Nikon D90.  So, what’s it do?

Redrock accessories for video DSLRs transform video DSLRs into production-ready cinema solutions by providing:

  • Rock-solid 15mm support system
  • Follow focus for accurate and repeatable focusing
  • Swing-away mattebox for light management and easy access to changing lenses
  • Shoulder mount and handgrips for steady handheld use
  • Support cage for enhanced stability and low angle shot

October 23, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Good news for those of you that weren’t quite ready to pull the trigger on the Nikon D700.  It looks like we’ll be seeing the Nikon D700 selling for $2699 or less for the foreseeable future.

Although I haven’t seen an official statement from Nikon on the price drop, many trusted retailers have already implemented it.  Amazon’s actually got it priced much less for the time being.

Here’s a rundown of the sale prices at trusted online retailers (as of the time of this posting):

Amazon – $2519.97

Adorama – $2679.00

B&H Photo – $2699.95

Ritz Camera – $2699.95

More Nikon D3x and D4 Rumors

October 23, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Over at a German Canikon community, a forum poster says he’s got some new rumors on a D3 replacement from Nikon (via Google Translate):

The latest information from the NPS say that environments later this year or likely D3x Nikon Nikon D4 and announced no later than the Nikon Solution in February also will be available. It will be a resolution of 24, x MP in a series of image speed of 5-6 pictures. The new D3 is to replace and not run parallel what astonished me first and also excited.

Nikon School DVD: A Hands-on Guide to Creative Lighting

October 21, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Heads up!  Joe McNally and Bob Krist have put together what is sure to be a solid education tool for all you Nikon shooters out there who want to learn more about Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS), which is one of the strong points of the Nikon DSLR system.  If it’s like everything else that Joe McNally does, this is probably 2.5 hours well spent. Nikon D3x Rumors Continue

October 18, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Yet another forum poster (this time AVForums) has claimed to have to goods on the much rumored Nikon D3x:

Went to dinner with Nikon this week.

The Nikon D3X is due in December 08.

Again, the 24MP number was tossed out there, which shouldn’t come as a surprise given that the D3x is expected to share the Sony A900’s sensor.  Also, this is the second time of late that we’ve seen the December ’08 time frame pop up.

If this is true, Nikon continues its terrible record of keeping product development news a secret . . . or maybe it’s all part of their plan?  The hype surround the past several Nikon DSLRs has been huge – and, generally speaking, Nikon delivered on the hype.

Nikon Press Event Bumped to November 20

October 15, 2008 By Eric Reagan

After a bit of confusion about who will see what and when, Kamera & Bild seems to have sorted things out and confirmed that Nikon’s press conference will be a worldwide event that takes place on November 20 (rather than October 22).  Kamera & Bild’s guesswork translates as follows:

Why the date of the press conference changed, we have not been told. Perhaps the product has been delayed, or the Nikon in Denmark had the time wrong.

Note, however, that the November 20 date, which is a Thursday, appears to be a solid, confirmed date.

Keep your eyes peeled for the Nikon MX format and/or Nikon D3x.
