After some huge leaks, GoPro has finally taken the wraps off its new HERO4 as it throws the gauntlet down again to make a statement as the clear leader in the action camera market with the HERO4 Black Edition. [Read more…]
Toshiba Announces Exceria UHS-I U3 SD Cards for 4K Video
Toshiba has announced a new line of Exceria SD cards, which are currently available in sizes up to 64GB – with a 128GB model coming in January 2015. The new cards are UHS-I Speed Class 3 cards, which means they provide a minimum write speed of 30MB/s and are capable of recording 4K video on many current 4K cameras.

Several sizes are available – 16GB, 32GB and 64GB – and range from $59.99 up to $179.99. Check them out here on Amazon.com.
Canon Cross Media Station Storage Concept

Recently, Canon announced (again) that it is developing a photo storage device called the Cross Media Station. The details are slim – only stating that it will use NFC technology to store photo and video files from Canon cameras and those files will be viewable on a TV.
It is stated to have networking capabilities as well, but again, details are slim.
In fact, details were more prominent when Canon announced its Cross Media Station in 2010 at the Canon Expo in Paris, which was virtually the same concept.
I have so many more questions than I do answers about this device. If the implementation of the device is anything like the product Canon has been working on since 2010, it probably needs to die.
People want to connect with their cameras to smartphones, not televisions . . . and that smartphone connectivity still needs to be polished instead of creating a TV box to manage (using a clunky remote) the vast quantity of photos and videos we shoot.
Nothing in Canon’s press release, which you can read below, gives me confidence that this will be a product that I would want to own. [Read more…]
Sony RX20 with 4K Video Capture Due Next Month

When Sony announced the RX10 last year, it raised some eyebrows with its 1″ sensor format, 24-200mm f/2.8 equivalent zoom lens and rather compact form factor for such serious specs. The video from the RX10 really impressed and it looked like it could be yet another market segment in which Sony moves way out in front. [Read more…]
GoPro “HERO” Entry-Level Model Leaks Out

In addition to the GoPro HERO4 that is expected next month, it appears a new entry-level model will accompany it and will reuse the title of just “HERO” – even though it is a fourth generation device (fifth if you count the HERO3+ as its own generation). [Read more…]

Sony Lens Roadmap Shows Full Frame Commitment

One of the few criticisms Sony’s A7 series receives is that there are not many native lenses available for the full frame cameras. Well, Sony is aiming to remedy some of that criticism by aggressively building out its full frame lens line in 2015.
In a new lens roadmap, Sony highlights its short term goal of 20 lenses in its FE line (that’s full frame E-mount lenses). I suspect we could start seeing these lenses launching as early as January 2015 at CES.
