Watch Felix Baumgartner’s 24-mile Free Fall from His Body-Mounted GoPro Cameras

February 2, 2014 By Eric Reagan

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYw4meRWGd4&w=640&h=360]

On October 14, 2012, Felix Baumgartner ascended more than 24 miles above Earth’s surface to the edge of space in a stratospheric balloon. Millions across the globe watched as he opened the door of the capsule, stepped off the platform, and broke the speed of sound while free falling safely back to Earth.

His max speed was over 800MPH – while enduring a violent spin as a result of little resistance at such high altitudes. While several other cameras were mounted the balloon capsule, none of them captured the experience quite like the GoPro cameras mounted on his helmet and body.

Look for a shorter version of this video tonight during the Super Bowl.

January 31, 2014 By Eric Reagan

Canon 7D Mark II Rumors

New rumors point to a second quarter 2014 unveiling date for the 7D Mark II, with actual availability not until third quarter.

There are really no new spec rumors at this point; however, the launch timeframe has been consistent for almost a year now. The one thing about the specs, however, that has been consistent since early rumors of the 7D Mark II started festering is the video-centric feature set.  [Read more…]

Nokia says “Goodbye DSLR” in New Lumia 1020 Ad

January 30, 2014 By Eric Reagan

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHTpuWep9yM&w=640&h=360]

Nokia declared war on DSLRs with its Lumia smartphones several years ago, stating that smartphones would replace DSLRs. A couple of years ago, Nokia’s ad campaign showed off some amazing footage that looked like we might all eat our words when the Lumia 920 was launched. Then, we discovered Nokia was actually trying to pass off DSLR footage as coming from the Lumia 920.

Now, we have this latest commercial spot making fun of “massive DSLRs” and suggesting that a 41MP Nokia Lumia 1020 can get the same or better shot. However, Nokia gets a little carried away with the suggestion, which makes the entire ad a little silly. [Read more…]

10 Features That Make the Sony A7 and A7R Excellent Full Frame Video Cameras

January 29, 2014 By Eric Reagan

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzxt3JnCmlk&w=640&h=360]

One of the things I wanted to do during my review of the Sony A7 and A7R was to put the video features through their paces. With the help of my uncharacteristically cooperative kids, I shot the above short, Nerfed, in a few hours using only the Sony A7 and A7R (along with a couple of shots with the GoPro Hero3 that were necessary for the plot). After using these cameras for this fun project and in other ways over the past few weeks, Sony makes a great case for its next generation of full frame cameras. [Read more…]

What If You Sent Your Nikon D600 in for Cleaning and Got a Nikon D610 Back in the Mail for Free?

January 28, 2014 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D610

Nikon has yet to admit any defect with the D600 despite a plethora of reports concerning a defective shutter mechanism. Even when the D610 was announced (way too early as a proper replacement for the D600), Nikon made no mention of the shutter defect. However, Nikon highlighted a new, improved shutter as a feature of the D610.

Now, it appears that some Nikon D600 owners who send their cameras in for cleaning are getting brand new Nikon D610 cameras back with little or no cost to the user. (Update: Nikon later confirmed that all service inquiries are handled on a case-by-case basis, but provided no direct response to the D610 and D600 shutter mechanism debacle. See official statement below.) [Read more…]
