Hasselblad Lunar Mirrorless Camera w/ Sony E-Mount

September 18, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Hasselblad-Lunar-Leather-Grip

Hasselblad has unveiled plans to launch a high-end mirrorless camera with a Sony E-mount.  Dubbed the “Lunar”, the camera will sport a 24.3MP APS-C sensor and capture full HD video.

The Hasselblad Lunar appears to be a rebadged Sony NEX-7 with lots of Hasselblad fluff on the outside.  The body and grip of the Lunar will feature carbon fiber, titanium, wood, leather and precious metals, including gold, to help drive up the price to around €5000 (no word yet on US pricing).

The Hasselblad Lunar should arrive in the first quarter of 2013.

“Departure Date” Shot with the Canon C300 at 35k Feet on a Plane Full of Passengers

August 1, 2012 By Eric Reagan

The Canon EOS C300 cinema camera recently made history when it was used to shoot “Departure Date,” the first movie almost entirely shot on airliners in flight.  The 24-minute short film was shot over 9 days across 3 continents covering 28,000 miles while flying at 35,000 feet on planes carrying real passengers.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster…

Somehow though, they made it work and the film premiered at the L.A. Film Festival on June 17, 2012.

Canon EOS M Specs Leaked

July 22, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon EOS M Mirrorless Camera

Specs for the new Canon EOS M mirrorless camera appear to have leaked out a day ahead of launch.  Canon Rumors posted the following specs on the EOS M.

Canon EOS M Mirrorless Camera Specs

  • 18mp APS-C
  • DIGIC V
  • Phase & Contrast AF
  • Video Servo AF
  • 3? Touchscreen 1.04million pixels
  • ISO 100-12800 (25,600 Expansion)
  • SD Card
  • 1920×1080 Video 30p/25p/24p
  • 1280×720 Video 60p/50p
  • MPEG-4, AVC/H.264
  • Adaptor at launch for EF lenses

Additionally, it looks like Canon will be employing the same 18MP sensor from the Rebel T4i with pixel-level phase detection AF sensors in place as I speculated a few weeks back.  These specs make the Canon EOS M look like a killer mirrorless model.

If all this is legit, it’s going to be fun watching Canon and Sony go toe-to-toe with their mirrorless models over the next couple of years.  It’s also a great thing for consumers to have two camera makers trying to one-up each other.

Does anyone see any glaring omissions that turns you off from this new mirrorless model?

Canon Mirrorless Camera to Get APS-C Format Sensor?

July 12, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon Mirrorless

The latest rumblings of Canon’s upcoming mirrorless format suggest that the sensor within will be larger than the Canon G1 X-sized sensor that has been previously rumored.  Instead, it seems that the popular 18MP sensor found in the Canon Rebel T4i will find its into the Canon mirrorless camera.

This seems like it will be a big win for Canon, if true, as it would enable the Canon mirrorless system to more directly compete with the strong offering from Sony’s NEX line of mirrorless cameras – with a standard-sized sensor and an apples-to-apples competition with what I think is the current king of the mirrorless market.

What are your thoughts on Canon using the larger, 1.6x crop APS-C format over the previously-rumored 1.85x crop sensor?

Canon Mirrorless Camera on July 23?

July 11, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon mirrorless camera announcement

An invite for a new Canon product announcement suggests that we may see Canon’s entry into the mirrorless camera market on July 23, 2012.

Prior rumors suggest a camera using a 1.85x crop factor sensor (i.e., same size as the G1 X) and featuring a different lens mount than the current EF and EF-S mounts found on Canon DSLRs.  Additional rumors say that the camera will launch with 3-5 lenses for the new “system” camera.
