Canon’s New “Nifty Fifty” EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens Unveiled

May 11, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 STM

Canon has unveiled its new nifty fifty lens – the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens at the same $125 price point of the old nifty fifty.

With an EF lens mount, the new lens supports both full frame and APS-C format Canon DSLRs and EOS Cinema Cameras. The new STM focusing motor should provide faster AF for still images and will also support Movie Servo AF on more recent Canon DSLRs.

The lens construction features a metal lens mount and a larger focusing ring than its predecessor. Additionally, it has optimized lens coatings to suppress lens flare and ghosting. The new lens features a rounded 7-blade diaphragm and a 14-inch minimum focus distance. The front filter diameter is 49mm.

The new lens will be compatible with the Canon ES-68 lens hood.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens is expected to ship May 21 for $125. Check it out here at B&H Photo.

Canon 1D X Mark II to Get ‘Massive Improvement’ in Dynamic Range?

May 4, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Canon 1D X Mark II Mockup

If you are beholden to DxO Mark scores as you camera judgment standards, then you know Sony and Nikon have been trouncing Canon in overall “sensor scores” of late. Of course, there is a lot more to a camera than an objective sensor score and many faithful Canon shooters would argue that the results they get from their DSLRs are superior to what a comparable Sony or Nikon model would deliver. Canon 6D Mark II Rumors

May 2, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Canon 6D Mark II

New rumors point to Canon releasing a 6D Mark II sometime after the Canon 5D Mark IV finally lands, which Canon Rumors says won’t be until 2016. On the spec side though, the 6D Mark II is rumored to be slightly smaller and lighter than the original Canon 6D and possibly have a different battery. Resolution is said to possibly increase slightly but no real earth-shattering changes are rumored for the camera.

Kai from DigitalRev is back with another over-the-top camera review. This time he pits the Nikon D7200, Canon 7D Mark II and Canon 70D against each other with an ultimate test (… I use that term loosely) in AF performance by pitting three shooters against each other in a very unique photography challenge.
