In the above video, Kai from DigitalRev takes the YongNuo 50mm f/1.8 lens for a spin and compares it directly with the lens it is attempting to copy – the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II.

When Canon announced the new 5Ds and 5Ds R cameras, it stoked the megapixel war flames once again by thoroughly trouncing the resolution of the Nikon D810 and Sony A7R cameras, both of which offer a mere 36MP full frame sensor.
While the 5Ds and 5Ds R are the latest to the 5D line, Canon is leaving the very popular 5D Mark III in the line-up. The Canon 5D Mark III was introduced in March 2012. By Canon’s prior timelines, the 3-year point is the proper upgrade timeframe. However, DSLRs have plateaued somewhat over the past few years and the need to upgrade every 2-3 years is less compelling for photographers and, by extension, camera manufacturers.

The Canon 5Ds and 5Ds R are now available for pre-order. So far, this is the camera of 2015 with its 50MP full frame sensor. I suspect initial availability will be limited to those who pre-order early, so you had better get in line now if you want one from the earliest shipments in June. Canon applied for a lens patent that was published back in December and featured a number of different optical embodiments, including a high-magnification zoom lens for a 1″ sensor format.
In the patent, the true technical measurements of the lens reveals an 8-180mm zoom with an aperture range of f/2-3. Adjusting these numbers for the roughly 3x crop factor of a 1″ sensor and rounding them off for marking purposes, you get a 24-600mm f/2-3 equivalent lens. [Read more…]

Canon Australia released the above video showing Georges Antoni’s twilight shoot for a billboard image with the Canon 5Ds R as a promo piece for the new 50MP DSLRs.

There is a big price drop for the Canon 7D now in effect, which brings the price down to half off at just $749 (was $1499). I don’t know for sure but I suspect retailers are clearing out stock of the 7D since the 7D Mark II has been released and it will probably be gone for good soon.
There original Canon 7D is almost 6 years old now but is still a heckuva camera. It broke the mold for Canon’s APS-C lineup when it was announced in 2009. See my original Canon 7D Review for more and check out the deal while it lasts here at B&H Photo.
