New rumors suggest that the Canon Rebel line will be switching to an EVF in place of the optical viewfinder. Additionally, the camera is rumored to feature the 20MP APS-C sensor found in the Canon 70D and the DIGIC 6 processor with an announcement date in 2015 Q2. [Read more…]
Canon EF 100-400mm Lens “On the Boards for Replacement”
In an interview with Cnet at Photokina 2014, Canon confirmed what we’ve been hearing for a long time in the rumor mill – that it is working on a replacement for the long in tooth EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens. [Read more…]
Canon Cross Media Station Storage Concept
Recently, Canon announced (again) that it is developing a photo storage device called the Cross Media Station. The details are slim – only stating that it will use NFC technology to store photo and video files from Canon cameras and those files will be viewable on a TV.
It is stated to have networking capabilities as well, but again, details are slim.
In fact, details were more prominent when Canon announced its Cross Media Station in 2010 at the Canon Expo in Paris, which was virtually the same concept.
I have so many more questions than I do answers about this device. If the implementation of the device is anything like the product Canon has been working on since 2010, it probably needs to die.
People want to connect with their cameras to smartphones, not televisions . . . and that smartphone connectivity still needs to be polished instead of creating a TV box to manage (using a clunky remote) the vast quantity of photos and videos we shoot.
Nothing in Canon’s press release, which you can read below, gives me confidence that this will be a product that I would want to own. [Read more…]

Canon 7D Mark II ISO Range Samples are Very Impressive!

Photographer Matt Granger got some hands on time with the Canon 7D Mark II at Photokina and ran through the ISO range for some casual ISO comparisons.
I’ve got to say that I’m very impressed with what I see from the 7D Mark II thus far. ISO 12,800 looks great for an APS-C sensor.
These samples remind me of the jump we saw from the 5D Mark II to the 5D Mark III. I’m not saying the 7D Mark II looks as good as the 5D Mark III images. Rather, the jump in image quality from the 7D to the 7D Mark II looks to be quite the jump . . . and, maybe we’ve got an APS-C camera that can hold its own against the last generation of full frame cameras. I can’t wait to get ahold of one of these things now.
You can see the rest of Matt’s image samples (and see larger sizes) here on his website. He also has a short hands-on video on that page covering some of the improvements.
