The new $500 palm-sized DJI Spark is now in stock and shipping out to customers. The Spark has an HD video camera on-board with a 2-axis gimbal. The video can be transmitted to your smartphone up to 2km away. You can also use DJI Goggles to view the FPV footage. Additionally, Spark captures 12MP still images. In 2015, the FAA passed a Registration Rule that required drone pilots to register their drones with the FAA, which included drones weighing more than 0.55 pounds and less than 55 pounds. DJI has grown to be the 800 lb gorilla in the drone industry. Other challengers like Yuneec, 3DR and GoPro appear to be in a race for a distant second-place spot.
We thought GoPro might be able to make a big splash and a bit of a comeback with its Karma drone last year. Of course, we all know how that went.
GoPro’s Karma looked great with a collapsible form factor. Then, DJI dropped the Mavic Pro on us a few days later that made the Karma look much less attractive. It was smaller, lighter and cheaper, as well as having an arguably better spec list. And then, to top it off, GoPro issued a recall for the Karma drones that it had sold because they kept falling out of the sky – thanks to a faulty battery latch. [Read more…]
DJI just announced its new Phantom 4 Advanced quadcopter to serve as a replacement for the original Phantom 4.
The new Phantom 4 Advanced is a slight step down from the Phantom 4 Pro and offers some pretty special features, including a 1-inch 20MP sensor that shoots 4K video at up to 60fps with a 100Mbps bitrate. [Read more…]

GoPro’s Karma drone raised some eyebrows after it was announced last month. Then, DJI came along a few days later and dropped the Mavic drone on everyone and raised even more eyebrows. Now, we have a pair of impressive, compact drones from which to choose.
