Nikon has officially taken the wraps off the new 1 Series J2 camera that will replace the Nikon 1 J1. As expected, it is a rather vanilla upgrade to the J1 with a higher resolution display, along with some control and exterior cosmetic changes. Additionally, Nikon introduced a new 11-27.5mm zooms lens for the 1 Series, along with an underwater housing (Nikon WP-N1) for the Nikon 1 J1 and J2 cameras. [Read more…]

Nikon 1 J2 and New 11-27.5mm 1-Series Lens Leaked Images
The Nikon 1 J2 will be the successor to the 1-Series J1 that was introduced last year. The 1Nikkor 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 lens will likely serve as a new kit lens with a 30-75mm equivalent zoom range. These images have purportedly leaked ahead of the official announcement of the new camera and lens units.
As a refresher, the Nikon 1 camera system is a mirrorless system with a 2.7x crop factor – in contrast to the 2x crop factor of the Micro Four Thirds system, the 1.5x crop factor of Sony NEX and the 1.6 crop factor of the Canon EOS M. The excellent new Sony RX100 compact camera also features a 2.7x crop factor (albeit without the interchangeable lens option).
An official announcement is expected as early as next week. Expect to hear lots more as we move closer to Photokina 2012.

If all this is legit, it’s going to be fun watching Canon and Sony go toe-to-toe with their mirrorless models over the next couple of years. It’s also a great thing for consumers to have two camera makers trying to one-up each other.
Does anyone see any glaring omissions that turns you off from this new mirrorless model?
