The new Pentax MX-1 serious compact camera with a retro flare is in stock and now shipping. The MX-1 sports a 12MP sensor, 4x zoom lens, 1080p HD video and has a fast f/1.8-2.5 lens. Focus and shutter response are very fast for a point and shoot camera. I had a very positive first look at the MX-1 at CES 2013.

CES 2013 was certainly too big for one person to cover everything. However, there are a ton of awesome things that a single person can see in a few short days.
I still have a few posts of product hands-on and new gear first looks to publish over the next few weeks. I was going through some of my video clips this weekend and decided to put together the recap video you see above. Every time I go to one of these shows, I always wish I had shot more footage.
What you see in this little 2+ minute video is only a fraction of all the gadgetry that’s at CES but, hopefully, you’ll get a little glimpse of what some of the photo and video gear presence was like at CES 2013. As always, Canon, Nikon and Sony had big and busy booths that were packed with reps and onlookers everyday of the show.
There are some other cool things that aren’t necessarily photo-related in there (e.g., AR.Drones, the Rocksmith video game that lets you play a real guitar on your Xbox or PS3, Sony’s waterproof Xperia Z phone, etc.), but I found myself ‘wowed’ by them.
If you’ve got any questions about something you see in the video, feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to dish out all the info I’ve got. Photography Bay’s CES 2013 coverage thus far can be found here.

The Pentax MX-1 is a new, retro-styled point and shoot camera with a 1/1.7″ sensor inside at 12MP resolution. It has a robust body, complete with a brass top that will add some character to individual units as they age.
Geared toward prosumers, the MX-1 offers RAW image capture and a fast, f/1.8-2.5 aperture on the 4x zoom lens. And, the 3″ LCD articulates, which makes high and low viewing easier. [Read more…]

The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM A1 is a new prime lens available for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax and Sigma mounts for full frame or crop sensor DSLRs. The guys at Learning Cameras have put together this nice 10-minute review of this lens.

I haven’t really used a K-mount camera that much since my old Ricoh KR-5 Super II that I used religiously a couple decades ago as my first SLR camera. As a result, my exposure to Pentax gear is generally limited to what I see at trade shows. Stepping aside . . . ain’t it a bit ironic that Ricoh now owns Pentax when it previously used Pentax’s K-mount to make K1000 clones like the KR-5 Super II?
With that nostalgia out of the way, I took a closer look at the new Pentax K-5 II and K-5 IIs at the Pentax booth at PhotoPlus 2012. At first blush, I love the way the camera feels in the hand, along with a very intuitive control and menu scheme. [Read more…]
